Fuel consumption is a topic regularly discussed at happy hours etc but usually Diesel versus petrol, I have been using LPG for just over 3 years in my current vehicle a Pajero 3.8 litre motor with automatic transmission. I have recently been told that aditives put in the LPG mix by Woolworths and Coles gives a poorer economy than other suppliers. Can anyone expand on this ?
over the past three years I have travelled over 40,000 KLM non towing and have averaged 19.6 litres per 100 klm using LPG from all brands of suppliers and have not noticed much variation. My gas system is not an injected system.
On our Western Australia trip doing a total of 12152 Klm and towing a van weighing 2500 Kg we averaged 26.4 litres per 100 klm and on our South Aust and Alice/the rock trip we did 8743 Klm and averaged 26.2 Klm, when towing I normally use 4th gear not overdrive and cruise between 85-90 KPH
I think these are reasonable results but would love to hear from anybody with similar setup how they have gone. As a Grey Nomad I am always interested in any suggesgion that will save on fuel consumption.

We had a 97 80 series cruiser on Petrol/gas. On gas it got around 17l/100km and towing the 18' van was up around 28.
This was one of the reasons we got out of it and got a diesel 3.2l ML Triton which has now been replaced with a MN 2.5l diesel Triton.
Both of there get 8 -10l/100 not towing and 13 - 15 with the same van on. I have absolutely no regrets changing over.

Hi David. The only time LPG is likely to give poor fuel economy, is if they have added larger amounts of Butane. This is done more so in large city outlets. Most of my purchases of LPG are in the country very rarely in the city. Have questioned a few tanker drivers & they said most of there loads were Propane, as they were also filling the Hotel & Hospital tanks aswell as the Servo. Currently here LPG is .75c/L & petrol is amost double that & Diesel is morethan double the price.

The Gas installer that told me about Woolworths and Coles said that there was a considerably higher concentration of Butane in their gas whereas 7 eleven and BP were higher in Propane so I am giving their fuel a try and BP have a LPG card that gives 2 cents per litre off. With LPG in the local area (Penrith) being 54 cents per litre without discount dockets I suppose that I cant complain when you are paying 75 cents per litre and with petrol around $1.35 per Litre and diesel around $1.45 per litre in the local area it makes gas cheap.
On a cost ratio basis when compared with petrol I get 2.5 times the amount of gas as I would Petrol giving me an average of 8 litres per 100 Klm in comparison (hope my maths is right) so I shouldn't be winging and obviously much better than if I was using Diesel although the Diesel has much greater pulling power on hills, for steep hills I usually switch to petrol and between each tank of LPG I normally run about 20 klm of petrol.
Hi Neil One of my travelling partners had an 80 series Land Cruiser on LPG and he said it was thirsty but his new Prado is a lot more economical on LPG both local and towing the same van so may be just that the 80 series is a bit more heavy on fuel he also reckons that the Prado pulls better with the van on the back.
