Hi guys. So happy to have found you after that current affairs program. We have decided to go to Tasmania. There will be 4 of us. We dont have a van and will have to go to onsite cabins. We can,t make up our mind whether to take our car on the ferry ( is it easy to get on?)or are we better off by plane and then hiring a car there. We will be there for nine days and want to go around tassy.
Also not sure which is the best route to take to see the best of it all.
Can anyone help by sharing their experiences there.?

Hi you will find it very easy to go around Tassie in 9 days quite small but you could spend months in tassie and not see it all it is such a great place to visit we have been there many times over the years and always look forward to going back. We have always taken our own car as quite cheap and very easy to get on and off the ferry hope you have a great holiday and keep safe cheers Red Dog {David}

I would recommend you bring your car over here.
It can be quite difficult to hire a car in the tourist season and they are not insured if you leave the bitumen? Almost impossible, if you want to see some spectacular scenery.
As for which direction?
That depends on what you are interested in.
The diversity here in Tasmania is vast. The East and West Coasts are entirely different and if cities are your thing, we only have Hobart.
Launceston, is only a large town!
Seriously though, enquire what is on around the sate and then make your plans.
A must see for interstate and international visitors is MONA in Berriedale, Hobart.
Have a nice time in Tasmania.

Louis, My late wife and I did it the same way 4 years ago before she got cancer. We took our Falcon on the Spirit and all was booked on-line, very easy. You will have a ball as we did. Tassie is a great place, I especially loved the history at Port Arthur and over on the West Coast. Gordon River Cruise and the Wilderness Railway trip are equal to none. We took 4 weeks and still didn't see everything so I will go over again solo one day soon and probably spend another 4 weeks. I could spend a couple of days in Port Arthur alone. Oh! you have to have the Blue Eye Trevalla (not Trevally) it's to kill for, as they say. In the mean time I am busy planning my trip to Townsville with my Avan camper.

Welcome Louis Compare the cost of your car-fare, with cost of hire car and flying and decide. The ferry is easy to drive on and off, you end up waiting for a while in the queue, and go wherever directed. You cant be in your vehicle during the trip. And check the quarantine restrictions... no fruit/veg allowed into Tas. It can be very busy at this time of year, you may need to book ahead.
We did what you plan to do about 30 years ago... went to Tas for 10 days with 4 children, flew to Devonport, picked up our hire-car and stayed in Tasvilla units which allowed for catering for the kids more easily than staying in motels and eating in cafes/restaraunts all the way. Cheaper too. Had a ball. Went back a couple of years ago sans kids with a camper-trailer and loved it all over again.

Lou, if you decide to take your car on the ferry, I really recommend that you also get a cabin, rather than the seated accommodation. Taking your car would mean you are able to take more gear with you - stuff like esky.

just a little tip Louis, if you take your car and get a cabin, a must on the night trip, make sure you take your own pillow into the cabin. You will find out why if you don't and you can't go back to your car during the trip.

We came over in November and we only had the seats. For us this was quite adequate and we slept rather well.
