Looking for any advice really, my wife and I are looking for a 6 week tour starting mid June, what do we hire, Camper, Caravan and Tow Wagon, 4WD Landcruiser, will we get it done in 6 weeks?
We want to get off road, wife is professional photographer, thinking of Landcruiser with pop top, awning, happy to stay in cabins, hotels as well.
Anyone got something suitable to hire me, what hire firms do you recomend , pitfalls, must see, appreciate any comments.
Cheers,
Paul

We took the same route in '76 only in reverse. We took 4 weeks but it was a push, so 6 weeks would certainly be an improvement.
The vehicle depends on your needs really. If you're hiring the vehicle, I don't think you'd go wrong with a poptop Landcruiser troop carrier with a roll out awning for shade.
Good luck.

there maybe a problem with hiring a 4x4, most hire companies don't allow you to go off road, silly ain't it, some will let you but you will need to shop around and it will cost extra.
have a safe trip.

I agree with this completely. It will allow you a great deal of flexibility and the capability to get into some interesting places.
Wombat is quite right about the limitation placed on these campers by many hirers, but give Sargent's a call as they not only seem to be more realistic in their expectations, but given enough time they will pretty much customise a camper to meet your needs.
Do you have your route planned? You may want to publish the route and see if anyone has any suggestions that could add to your tour.
I think Britz hires Troopie based pop up roof campers that are allowed to go off bitumen.

Britz do the most business in this department of vehicle hire. Do not consider Wicked Campers. They are very popular with backpackers from overseas, but they aren't versatile enough for what you are planning. I think Maui do a similar vehicle to Britz. You might have to "Google" and check out what is available when you get to Oz. Welcome to the Grey Nomads Forum to the Land Of The Long White Cloud - Aotearoa. Kiora. Welcome!

Britz, Maui, Backpacker are all the same company. Their 4WD Troopy campers, I think, are equipped with basic equipment, including sleeping bags etc. The ones with the roof that lifts up when camped are more stable, I believe, to drive, than those with a higher hard top.
