We are visiting Melbourne for a week or so early Feb. Can anybody suggest a van park, preferably in Southeast quarter close to the city and importantly next to a bus or rail link so we can leave our cubby house and use public transport to town?
Although we're only 2.2 mtrs high I'm sure that and parking costs will be prohibitive.

We have found Wantirna van park to be the ideal place for us when we visit Melbourne, which we do frequently (family there).
I couldn't tell you if it's north south east or west but it is on a direct bus route to the city and the bus stop is right at the front gate.

Sth West Gippsland is good, reasonably close to Melbourne, very close to Phillip Island, very close to Wilsons Prom. Is close to heaps actually. I will PM you rrox.

Sorry guys but Coburg is nowhere near Prahran and hence the Prahran market. The Queen Victoria Market is on Elizabeth Street in the city and the continuation of Elizabeth Street is Sydney Road (heading north); so this would be the closest historical market (I think there is one in Preston) and is the most famous and well worth a visit. You can catch a tram all the way down Sydney Road to the city.
There is also a CP in Braybrook called Ashley Gardens and is supposed to be good, but being a Melbournite I've never needed to stay there.

Neither are in the south east Richard and Felicity -Twin Bridge at Dandenong is on a bus line which will take you to train to city - Chelsea also has a caravan park - and there is a Big 4 in Frankston buses and trains close by both of these. Good luck, and have a great time in Melbourne - there is a free City Circle tram which you can hop on and off, travels round the perimeter of the CBD, make sure you visit the Victoria Market - and try the Eureka Tower at sunset - spectacular!

Both the Big 4s are about 10ks from CBD.. my subsequent research tells me closest to CBD will be more suitable to our needs so South-East is not quite so critical.

Thanks a mill everyone for your help. Your tips and Mr Google have helped us to decide on Coburg Van Park (actually named Melbourne Caravan Park, but in Coburg). Hopefully will get a site when I ring them tomorrow. I'll report back on the place in due course

Hi Roxy
We have stayed at all the van parks mentioned depending on where we needed to be. If it is close to the city we stay at the Big 4 in Coburg. It is a bit tight getting into some of the sites but a nice park. Very easy to get to the city via Sydney Road. There is also a bus service just outside the park.
Also close to the Parhan Market which is a fantastic and a must see.

Not sure Ma but I know a park closed down around that area but not sure what one, there was two in the approx area. Thinking a bit more about it, I think the closed one was on Stud Road.

Think it probably was the one in STud Road Doug. We stayed at the Wantirna one before coming over here and it is a large park and there was no indication that anything was wrong back in November. Thanks for your concern.

Sorry but Prahran Markets are about 15km away from Coburg on the other side of the city. Coburg is Nth of Melb, Prahran is SE of Melb. However there is a good multi cultural market on Sydney road in Coburg
If you wish to spend most of your time in Melbourne CBD then either the Big Four at Coburg or Ashleigh Gardens would be fine. You would need to book ahead as both are used by those travelling across to Tassie.

Helen, your are right it was Rowville, it takes a bit to get the memory working sometimes.
Richard and Felicity, enjoy Melbourne and being with your family. If you have time check out the Crown Casino precinct but don't go in, the Docklands area is also a good walk around. Enjoy.

I've stayed at Ashley Gardens, the Big4 in Braybrook. Its quite good and has a bus stop right outside that will take you into the city in no time at all. Its a pretty easy drive from there into the city as well.
