If anybody is interested Shirls and I just got back home from Darwin yesterday...We seen the Queen Mary 2 The Love boat..and another huge ship forgot the name....The 70th anniversary of the Bombing of Darwin Lindy Chamberland in person at the inquest( When are they going to leave this poor women alone? He's a view we seen every Morning at Breakfast
Wow, they've certainly done a good job of rebuilding Darwin after 1974. I worked on prawn trawlers out of there in '76, and the wharf to the back of the pic was where we tied up. The town was cleaned up, but nothing had been rebuilt except the Darwin Hotel, which has since been demolished. The Casuarina Shoppin Centre was a very small suburban group of shops, the hospital was a hole in the ground where they were pouring the footings. I was a patient in the old Darwin Hospital with meningitis. There was no marina or croc resistant beach. Many of the ruins were house stumps with floor boards and plumbing hanging off them. Palmerston was a country town on the outskirts, and the most southern suburb was Berrimah where the prison is now. I've been there twice since '76 and still marvel at the changes and consequent improvements of a city that was flattened. The only thing that didn't change was the climate. Nice pics Jim.

Chris you wouldn't find the hospital now, they have built almost all the way out to there. Amazing developments thats for sure, and not cheap at all.

We were in Darwin about 18 months ago and loved it all - except the humidity in July! They are certainly making the most of their disasters in the tourist trade which I think is great.

We were in Darwin in June 2004 and the day we arrived was humid and miserable, setting up the van in the humidity really got to me but the rest of our stay was beautiful, warm, dry days and warm evenings were absolutely magnificent. We are looking forward to our next trip up there, sometime in the not too distant future I hope..

We reckon Darwin is just the best place in Australia to spend the winter months, we're planning on our third visit in 4 years this year. The Darwin golf club has monthly memberships available, so we join up for a few months and play 4 times a week.
