Saw three wombats while holidaying in Cradle Mountain Tasmania.
There was a daddy wombat, a mummy wombat, and a junior wombat. The daddy was some fifty metres further away from the others and I went a little closer to the others to take some photos.
All of a sudden the daddy decided he would start running towards me. He not only ran, he was bolting. He was running faster than I ever could. I was actually starting to get ready to see how high I could jump, when he changed direction and decided he would jump on the mummy wombats back. Well, she was having nothing of that and gave him a mule kick which sent him over backwards and he did a backwards somersault then jumped up for another go. She punted him again. I guess he decided to cut his losses and go back to scrounging around for a feed. The youngster headed for the bushes while this was going on.
I later did a google search to see how fast a wombat could run. Would you believe they can do a hundred metres in less than 10 seconds? Faster than an olympic sprinter.
If he had've hit my leg there would be no more caravanning for me, more than likely I'd be in a wheelchair.
Remind me never to get too close to a randy wombat.
Cheers
Ross

I'm sure the wombat on here could be dangerous if we covered up his hole.

Cover up his hole and he will explode. Wish I had thought of that.

That's very interesting Ross and like Gerty says they can be very dangerous.
Mrs Wombat told me our resident Wombat can get quite randy too and she has to give him a few good kicks to keep him inline which I am sure we can all understand. Here is a pic of Wombat in human form when we last saw him after Mrs Wombat had straightened him out a bit.
Footnote: Wombats cannot outrun frilled necked lizards which run on two legs for extra speed and are called bipeds.......

Wombats can't outrun shotgun pellets either.

My mind went into animation mode as I pictured the description of wombat activities. Apart from the obvious risk factor it must have been funny to watch as a spectator.

If wombats can run so fast why are there so many dead ones on the side of the road?? Just curious..........

It is probably due to the direction in which they choose to run

I was once told that wombats are a bit silly and do silly things
Actually come to think of it, I have seen a few silly things from a wombat on here, so maybe it's true.

Esmeralda, their eyesight is actually fairly poor, I guess they dont see cars till its too late. Then they take the same defense action as they do down their hole... put their bum toward the threat! Their bum is really strong and tough, dingoes cant bite into it so I heard. Not much use against a car though poor things.

Hitting a wombat with a motor vehicle especially from the hard a..s end can roll the vehicle over. While they look soft, fluffy and cuddly they are anything but. Or is that butt? They're strong, tough and solid, so avoid running them over if you can. It could be more than the wombat which gets injured, or worse. JUest before there were a few dead ones on the side of the Eyre Highway between Border Village and Nundroo, probably because there was green pick feed on the sides of the road. There had been thunderstorms across the country at that time and as we know, the shoulders go green first from the run-off. Drive carefully folks.
