Hi has anybody been over to Moree and lightning ridge?
Thinking of heading there in May, but have heard some negative things.
Any thoughts from those who had been there will be welcome.

I go through Moree all the time, on my way up the Newell. Someone warned me not to freecamp there. But there is a great hot pool that others on here say is fantastic.

LR is very interesting and there is a newish caravan park there, we stayed with friends on their claim so cannot give a report on the van park, had a look at the hot pool but did not go in wombats don't like water

I was in both last year. At Moree I was advised not to stay at the campground (the showground from memory). I stayed at a CP on the Newell Hwy on the Glen Innes side of town - can't remember the name but it was only a couple of dollars more expensive than the showground and came with it's own (free) hot pools - I think there were 3 of them at varying temperatures - and swimming pool. I loved Lightning Ridge. Really quirky place. There's a new CP opposite the hot pool but it's a fair way out of town. I stayed at one called the Crocodile CP - not great but cheap and close to town.

We spent a couple of weeksat lightening ridge during the winter and really enjoyed it. I was in the hot pool every day and found it very good for my back. Didn't find any decent opal though.

G'day Freehazzas,
The cp to stay at in Moree is called the Gwydir Aquapark, it is on the hwy south of town. choice of hot pools at different temps and a cool pool all free. The park is a member of Family parks.
Have not stayed at L/Ridge for quite some time but I have read of a new park there(now 4 in town) you can read about all the parks on Badgers site.

Hi,the new park in The Ridge is The Opal C/P and it is great,campfire at night,great camp kitcen,ameties as good as home,now is a Top Tourist Park and last heard the cost was $29 les disc.We stayed in 2011 and definitly will return,lots to see,great town.

Thanks for the replies, that helped a bit, We had decided that we would stay at the Gwydir Aquapark and the new Opal, so its good to here thoughts on it. We ran into a lady here that was telling us how bad Moree was and how dangerous etc, so it sort of worried us, but I think she was a bit scared to get out of her own van at times anywhere. lol lol
Anyhow you have put our minds at rest. I cant wait for those hot pools in winter. Its the one thing I miss from not having our house now, is those hot baths.

Call into the Info Centre at L.R. and get their "Ridge" Card I think it's called, cost $10 and gives a discount from some of the shops and also the park we stayed in was Lorne Station. May apply to the other parks too, not sure. I think it ws $19 a night powered site with the card. While you are there, go and see the Black Hand Sculptures - well worth it. Happy days

We always stop off at Moree at the Gwydir Carapark on the southern side of town - they have their own hot pools, and it costs us $27/nt (Family Pk member) but it sure is worth it, particularly after the 'fun' we had in January just south of Moree - be VERY careful of the potholes heading north into Moree from Narrabri, there are some doozies that appear to like busting springs on vans!! However, no matter where you travel, take care and stay safe!

The pool at Lightning Ridge is certainly on the hot side.

What an informative lot you all are. I stayed at Moree in the park on the eastern exit. They also have a hot pool, and I did wallow in the town pool one day. The info on Lightning Ridge prompts me to make my way there next time I'm out that way. Just lurv those hot pools. Those roads have been subjected to some huge floods in the last 12 months, and the roads are wearing the damage caused by the inundation. It seems to take the roads repairers a long time to get there. Qld is the same north to Roma and all points north and west. The road between Roma and Emerald is enough to make your arms ache. Mine ached for a week, so I used Christmas as an excuse to indulge myself with treatment and recuperation.

Really enjoyed our time at Lightning Ridge a couple of years ago. We stayed out at Lorne Station and enjoyed the more "bush" like environment out there. They have some powered sites. It was before the new caravan park opened - didn't like the looks of the other parks in town: very crowded. The township was interesting - their "car door" tourist drives were great. We had a day driving around the Grawin and Glengarry fields, to the west - well worth doing. We found Lightning Ridge more interesting and pleasant than Coober Pedy.
