Subject: Fw: : Please pass this on - It has been confirmed by Telstra & Australian Police]
Hi Everyone &nbFjnHdQ$$; MSPProf=2XwxvFk0!CXm!K; Please read below and pass on to your family & friends. Got a call last night from an individual identifying himself as an Telstra Service technician who was conducting a test on our Telephone lines. He stated that to complete the test I should touch nine(9),zero ( 0), hash (#) and then hang up. Luckily, I was suspicious and refused. Upon contacting the telephone company, I was informed that by pushing 90#, you give the requesting individual full access to your telephone line, which allows them to place long distance telephone calls billed to your home phone number. I was further informed that this scam has been originating from many of the local Jails/prisons. DO NOT press 90# for ANYONE. PLEASE pass this on to your friends. If you have mailing lists and/or newsletters from organizations you are connected with, I encourage you to pass this on. Stephen Cooper Detective Senior Constable 29748 Victoria Police State Crime Squads Level 12, 412 St. Kilda Road , Melbourne (03) 9865 2663 or 0414644499 Stephen.cooper@police..vic..gov.au

Do we really have to use the forum for peddling this stuff without checking it first? Especially as in this case it publishes the name and email of someone who may or may not be a real person.

Really sorry guys. Haven't heard of this one before, and with the E-mail address included, assumed it was legitimate.
Will try not to stuff up again.
Cheers,
Sheba.

These things pop up all the time. Before passing them on it pays to check Snopes to confirm and negate the validity of the email. Then advise the sender of the outcome and the Snopes website to avoid these things rotating again. It's always better to be safe than sorry, but avoid sending on these chain emails. I usually delete them, and if I've seen an email before, it's pretty certain your contacts have too. These things have been around since the internet was born. For every security screen a scammer is out there working out how to overide it and start the process again.
What I want to know is when there will be some sort of control over these internet crooks? It's very hard to substantiate the origin of contacts, businesses etc and if they're legitimate. I don't send many emails on these days, unless I haven't seen it before. If I was entertained or informed I may send it on to my contacts who may enjoy or benefit by it. In the case of the chain emails, the sky won't fall, you or your family won't have bad luck or die if you don't send them on.
Just got this from a friend.
