Does anybody know the maximum ball weight for a 2006 ML320CDI. The vehicle is rated at 3500kgs braked but I dont know the ball weight. I have put a deposit on a private sale for a ML320 and would be towing a 20"9" van that tares at 2160 kg
Cheers

I don't know the tech details but I do remember being at a caravan yard where the dealer told us a story about refusing to sell a caravan to a Mercedes owner because he said the car wouldn't pull the weight of the van. It's a matter of insurance being invalidated. So check carefully mr ed before you go ahead.

Ya beat me to it Pete. Cut and paste from General>
Ed, Your information is correct. ML320 Tow weight 2260Kg with a max ball weight of 225Kg. The ratings were revised in 2008 to 3500Kg with a piddling ball weightv of only 140Kg. Tow bar complinace plate must be changed to reflect the updated weights. So maximum ball weight is 225Kg up to a tow weight of 2260Kg, but if the 2260Kg is exceeded the ball weight is reduced to only 140Kg. So effectivley the tow weight is a max of 2260Kg. Cheers, ozjohn.

Does that mean he can only load the van with another 100kg?

Yep! Filling just one water tank and the HWS will put the van overweight for the vehicles tow weight capacity. Van Tare 2160. Vehicle Tow weight capacity 2260Kg (with an adequate Ball weight) Difference 100Kg. Conclusion: Vehicle in unsuitable to tow the OP's van.

Thanks Ozjohn. I thought I could still do the maths even though I didn't know all those tech details. Hope mr ed can get it sorted.

Thanks everyone for all of your input looks like the Merc was never meant to tow anything substantial - no i am not drowning my sorrows - it was the greatest car I had ever owned even for a short time - I have resold it and now I will start again - maybe when we get back from our trek around oz we may even buy another....
Also that data about ball weights did that come from a web site - maybe I should have a read of that sometime ??
Here is the tow ball ratings from the database that OzJohn and I use.
