Lets hope this goes through.. for all of us who regularly use the Pacific Highway, especially north of Port Macquarie, NSW, the present highway is a nightmare

Just to add to Guru's comments, similar comments apply to the Bruce Highway as they are carrying out major road works from Bundaburg up, so be aware. In places you will come across major work areas every 2 to 3 Kms.

Quite a lot of "back roads" are also in work.. care needed and slow downs required all over the joint!
Huge expense going out all over Qld. on road construction and maintenance.
Bit of a pain at present but augers well for the future.. the country's looking better than ever before so we recommend making the best of it, even though a little inconvenence will occur here and there.
We've been waiting a long time, so mustn't complain!

Thanks for the warning briche, might wait a while before heading north of Bundy this year. Thankfully there are plenty of back roads to take as alternatives. The Pacific Highway does sound a nightmare PetenGail, thankfully I've never been on it.

Being held up by roadworks can be a bit of a pain but at least it means that something is being done to fix the roads. Fixing a road without there being roadworks is a bit like making an omelette without breaking the eggs

Good News! In Rockhampton neighbors told us they had taken 6 hours from Bundy to Rocky because of so many roadworks. We went over that road on a Sunday and the roadworkers were nearly all having the day off, hardly any hold-ups!
Wait till Sunday Marj, then off you go!
Yes the Pacific Highway is a mess in Northern NSW, roadworks everywhere.

As long as the structure of the road is being improved the money will be well spent, rather than a patch up and cheap remedy to flood damage and heavy, heavy traffic. The Bruce is too narrow, very rough in places and an absolute nightmare. The inland roads are very rough and undulating after all the floods. The traffic is getting bigger and heavier, and the roads are just not up to it. If anyone comes across major road work maybe you could put it on the forum please.

You might be lucky Mergatroy, they'll be finished by then, or else just travel on weekends. Enjoy!
