We are 'holed up' in a CP for a while waiting for repairs to be done. It's been interesting to see the different rigs coming in each day. Yesterday 2 5th wheelers came in. One of them was 28' long and they told us they were charged $8/night more than we were. They have been on the road for 3.5 years and have never been charged more for being a 'big rig' before. They reckon they would use no more power etc than any of the 23' vans that were in the park last night. Anyone else had such an experience?

If a CP provided larger sites to accommodate these larger rigs I think they would be justified in having a surcharge.

i guess its the same if you camp in a tent and use the powered site for a laptop & fridge? would use bugger all but some places would still charge say $25 for a bit of lawn.. dont know on that one i guess..

Unfortunately, as the 'big rig' owner said 'Caravanners talk' and he will pass on that Riverside at Nyngan has done that to him and his much smaller 5th wheeler companions! I haven't heard any of the other large caravan owners say the same.
Apart from the above incident, the CP is a lovely park beside the river with lots of space. It also has some very nice country style cabins that have been built in recent years.

As Milo said... we've seen a single man with a little tent who wanted a powered site pay the same rate as us.
Lifes not fair, dont expect caravan parks to be!

Yes, they were on a single drive through site like the rest of us.

Yep just because you are solo and have a smaller rig don't expect it to be cheaper, I'm both and pay the same as a 23' van and tug.
I must say though I did get one CV park in Cowes Phillip Island Vic take $6 a night off because I was solo, it was the cost of an extra person.
This has been discussed on this forum a couple of times and not long ago.
I'm not complaining, I just take it is it comes.

We have stayed at Nyngan a number of times. Nice town well worth a stop over for a few days and good place to restock the larder, do the laundry, etc. First time was at the Park next to the Squash courts east of town.
Other times have been at Riverside CP which for us is by far the better of the two parks from an outlook viewpoint, particularly if you camp down by the river (240v available if you want as well as a firedrum plus wood). One occasion we were up in the drive through sites due to works going on down on the river flats. Our drive through site had a double power outlet and other sites had two vans backing up to each other.
The large 5th wheeler clearly accepted the price he was charged for his site when he booked in, however when finding he was paying more ($8) than others per night did he go to the office and question why?
I certainly would have.

To clarify my earlier post I do believe that if caravan parks charge extra for a large rig it should be on the basis of providing a larger site for the rig not for a site the same size as that for a normal rig. Charging $8 extra for alleged increased power consumption is a specious excuse.
In a free market economy caravan parks can charge what they like but customers also have the right to take their business elsewhere and to recommend that others do likewise.
Powered sites: $25.00 for 1 adult and $28.00 for 2 adults, $7.00 every extra person
Motor Homes $ 35.00 for 2 Adults, $7.00 every extra person
Unpowered sites: $12.00 for 1 adult and $24.00 for 2 adults, $5.00 per child from 3-16 years, $7.00 per extra person 17 years & over.
Drive thru private en-suites: $35.00 for 2 adults, $7.00 every extra person
I agree it is a rip off to charge motorhomes an extra $7 pn. Quite obvious that they don't want motorhomes stopping in their park.
"Note to myself" Avoid this one!!
Cheers!

The 5th wheeler was told the reason it was dearer was because they were a big rig and that was 'management's decision' (obviously as per website above). They said they would say something as they left but I'm not sure if they did - but as I said before, they said 'caravanners talk'. Ron and Shirley, they no longer do 'back to back' on the top sites as they found it wasn't working so all are now single use drive through sites - and tonight the ones they are all full and there are some BIG caravans here (one would have to be at least 25' long.) It is a nice town though and yes, ideal for topping upo etc.
