I was poking about the Centrelink site when I stumbled across "The Bass Straight Passenger Vehicle Equalisation Scheme Rebate".
It seems that vehicles towing caravans or motor homes (plus all the other passenger vehicles) may be elegible for a fare rebate of up to $732 return.
It seems that the fare paid to the ferry operator is reduced. ie you don't have to pay the full amount & claim a rebate.
Has anyone used this scheme?
We have long thought about returning to Tassie, but didn't look in to it too much because of the perceived high cost of transporting the van. Might have to do some real homework. This post is the starting point. Then on to a ferry operator.

I'd be very interested to hear the outcome of this one Cupie. I too have thought about taking the van over but unless you stay a fair time to justify the fare it is very expensive. I've been there a few times but not with the van.

Me too........would like to know how it all works.
Go to the site Jon & Hylda mentioned above ( http://www.spiritoftasmania.com.au/bookings.html ) and go through and complete the book online section and it will tell you the cost for your car/van or motorhome.
You can calculate the cost then exit out of the booking.

Us too.........we are heading that way this summer and have been putting a bit away each week for the cost, but this makes it more affordable again. Will do some research on the sites mentioned.
Thanks heaps guys.

i'll just stay on the mainland. that way, at least if i want to go home earlier i can and i will not be stuck waiting for a boat. rebate or no rebate it's all the same to me. if i go again, I'll do the same as last time - plane and hire car.

the fare you get offered is with rebate off
might be cheaper to fly on a cheap fair and hire a camper than bringing your own
plenty off camping grounds and free camp sites

It seems the fares already have the rebate taken off.
Wouldn't it be easier to quote a cheaper price for one and all that doesn't require a rebate, it seems that is what they are doing in a round about way, quote the real fare in the first place would be plainer english rather than confusing everybody with rebates.

On our last & only trip to Tassie we left the van with a relo at Castlemaine & took the Patrol over on the Tassie Devil Cat ... what a ride!. We stayed at a range of very good & affordable accomodation & had a great time.
Thought that it might be good to take the van over but the cost of an overnight cabin & length of the rig puts the price up. I'll post the $ figure in due course.
Looks like a protracted exercise to come up with a final plan.
Thanks for your replies ..... Much appreciated by us both.
Found this on the Spirit of Tasmania website
The site is: http://www.spiritoftasmania.com.au/fares.html
