Its a while since we used it, but the road down to Bega used to be fine. Theres a steep section on Brown Mountain with a few tight corners. The road to Batemans Bay also has a steep descent on the Clyde Mountain, and both of these roads have been closed temporarily over the past few months due to landslides and roadworks. Difficult choice, but the Kings Hway is more in the direction you are going... maybe give a phone call to the visitor centre in Batemans Bay before giving up on it and using the Hume. Safe travels.

We would like to travel from Canberra over to the coast, in particular Kiama (want to show Pete where we used to spend Christmases when I was a child), but a couple of people have told us that the King's Highway to Batemans Bay is not real good towing a van, as is some other roads across - can anyone advise us which is the best way to go, or do we give it a miss this trip and head straight up the highway through Goulburn? Ta and thank you.

I havn't done it but would going up to Sydney or just below and then down work GD? You are more local to that area than me.
I have been trying to get to Kiama for about two years now but something always stops me.

if your going via braidwood beware as there is a still downhill section that will test your unit

Pejay, just heard the weather forcast for the next few days... STRONG winds and lotsa rain.. worse on the coast. Kiama wouldnt be much fun in that weather.
Sadly it might be better to head north on the Hume

That's a pity Pejay. You could have gone Kings Highway if you took it slowly on the Clyde Mtn - we do it all the time. You could still do it if you want to via Goulburn, Picton Rd, Mt Ousley, Wollongong and Kiama then go back up via Sydney (or Picton rd again). Picton rd is now 90kph all the way and Mt Ousley is best done at truck speed limit of 80kph. We've done both ways lots of times. There's also a great freecamp on the Kings Hwy route at Warri reserve on the Shoalhaven River - Canberra side of Braidwood. Next time maybe.

Thank you everyone, having taken advice and discussed it this afternoon, we have decided to head back to warmer places (home in Qld) heading up the Hume Highway - we feel it just isn't worth trying to get over to the south coast of NSW at the moment.
