We are off to Port Augusta in a week or so and are wondering if anyone knows where there is a good ( free or low cost ) Camp site near there. ?
We are completely independent, as we have a generator, solar power and battery back-up.
I don't mind paying a reasonable amount but, not what the C/van Pks are asking now days, we will be in the area for about three weeks.
anywhere in the bush with easy access for the Bus and trailer would be great.

YEP about 3 or 5 ks out of the pt heading for whyalla on the left hand side near big tanks very quiet. Or pt lonsdale 13ks north of whyalla turn left and follow to the end just past the gas cold showers toilets and water

They are actually about 26km from Pt Augusta but are a good spot.
There is even more seclusion when you turn right toward Perth, a short distance (5 k's or so) on the left there are places to pull off behind trees. Very nice.

We parked up for a night in the Iron Knob pub carpark. It was 45 degrees and we just wernt going any further that day. They let us plug into a 15 amp outlet at the base of the light pole, let the wife cool down in the cool room, allowed us to shower in an airconed room that was being set up for a late arriving customer. In exchange we ate at the pub and spent a few hours having an ale or 4 with the locals. Was a great night and very appreiated cheers blaze

Fitzgerald Beach on the way to Whyalla, left turn, has two camp spots. One with toilets, the other with not. Very quiet.
Have also stayed at the tanks. Very quiet spot off the highway.
Crystal Brook has a small council run caravan park. Last time we stayed there was $18 a night.

Wilmington Bush Camp, out of Wilmington on a few k's of good dirt road was absolutely lovely when we stayed there last. Its not free, but is quite cheap, very quiet, and the manager Wayne friendly and helpful.

I think you find site 750 in camps australia Power Station Rd will meet your needs was $7.50 a night when we were there couple of months ago. Nice meals in the footy club Friday Saturday and Sunday nights. Enjoy.

The S A section of camps 5 only goes up to 715,
Are you referring to the Camps 6 book ?
if so, has anyone any idea where this site may be in Camps 5 ?

This may be a bit far out of Pt Augusta for you at 60K. Near Mambray Creek in the Mount Remarkable National Park. But it is a fantastic place with clean toilets and a standard Nat Parks honour system payment of a few dollars per day. We stopped overnight here in June last year and it was a magic place with emus wandering around the place. Just copy and paste this into google maps search box and zoom into the green arrow.

I've had a look at the site through Google Maps and it looks nice and peaceful, well away from the Hoon Trail, which is fine by us.
I'm just wondering, How the Devil did you come across that place ?
seems to be a long way off the highway.
An extra 60 odd km will be nothing to us, after coming half way across the country from Perth.

We originally intended to head to Mildura via Orroroo, But it was getting late in the afternoon and it was raining up in the hills just around there and I didn't feel like setting up the camper trailer in the rain, so we just headed a bit further south to skirt the storm, and saw the sign to Mt Remarkable National Park. I thought we'd just set up in a bush trail somewhere there, but found the little camp area instead. I wouldn't have minded spending another day at least there but we had time constraints. Not sure if you'd get a bit stir crazy spending a couple of weeks there though. We found a small roadside shop a bit further south that had some very tasty smoked tuna as well, which was a bonus.

19 km NE of Port Germein or 46 km SE of Port Augusta or 45 km N of Port Pirie
Baroota Creek Campground is 200m from the national park entrance and opposite the Baroota Homestead ruins.

Price: At the time of our stay - SA National Park entry fee of $8.50 + a camping fee of $6 per vehicle (ie $14.50) or purchase a SA National Parks Pass with a camping option attached (currently a 2 month pass with the camping option costs $58 which allow camping up to 4 nights at any one campground. See SA NP website for full details). Self registration and the ranger also drives around.
Sites: 11 x numbered sites spaced apart on a circular ring road and all on a dirt surface. Perimeter trees may provide some shade.
Amenities: Male and female drop toilets. Rainwater tank and a tap (not suitable for drinking).
Pet Friendly: No
Mobile Phone Reception: Patchy Next G but a friend had reception on iPhone (Virgin).
Conditions: Fire ban 1 November to 30 April. Gas fires only.
Campground fires in designated fire pits are permitted from 1 May to 31 October but wood is not to be gathered in the national park. A permit is required from The District Council of Mount Remarkable to collect firewood from the roadside outside the national park. You may bring your own wood or purchase plantation wood for a fee to the NP. For full details refer to signs at the amenities block or NP website.
A sign in the day use area states - Bush camping is not permitted during the fire danger season, please plan day walks only. During the fire danger season, camping is only allowed at Mambray Creek Campground.
Rubbish collection is not provided in the NP so bring something to take your rubbish out with you.
