My dh and I have just travelled through from Newcastle to Wollongong on their toll roads. This is a rare journey for us and can't see any point opening an account to pay the tolls. Does anyone know how to pay the tolls? I've checked their site and they recommend just paying the account when we get home. That's OK with us but we will incur fees... Hate fees thanks, Jay-Jay

e-pass (eMU-pass) You can go online after and buy this pass, not sure how many days after but my family have just been through and bought the pass beforehand, have just said you have so many days allowed after to pay. You can pay the account when it comes in also as my son did one for Qld Go-Via, there were no extra charges involved.

You have 48 hours to pay. If you do it again, go online beforehand and pay a visitor toll which will last a month. Check out http://www.roam.com.au/

Hi campers
Yes I realise we have 48 hours to pay the tolls but we have already done the journey and now need to pay. It just how to do it after the fact. DH rang their number but got an indian lady with heavy accent so didn't get the info we need.. Maybe we will just wait for the bill to arrive at home... thanks, anyway. Jay-Jay

I knew there was a glitch to that bloody toll system for visitors and interstaters. It's a money trap. By the way, can anyone tell me what the single toll is? You know, the amount it costs every time you pass through a toll gate? No one from the toll mob will tell me.

Jay-Jay you can pay by credit card by ringing the number. Pity you got a strong accent. Maybe you should try again. If you wait for the bill it will include a fine for not paying it.

CG I'm away at the moment and have no access to my files but the tolls in NSW are different for every toll road and for how many 'sections' on the road you do. When we get our statements they will indicate which sections we have done on which days and how much they have deducted for them. The tolls have recently increased in NSW.

You have up to 48 hours after the journey to arrange payment. You phone 13 TOLL to arrange this. This number is prominently displayed at regular intervals on the M7 and I would think other tollways too.
You can also arrange payment through the above website for a small saving in the admin charge.
I can't see why this is confusing as it's been quite clear to me on my few journeys on the M2/M7

In some cases avoiding toll roads would be like the plague! Especially if travelling from Newcastle to the Hume Highway.

If you get somebody with a strong accent just say "excuse me I do not mean to be rude but can I talk to somebody I can understand" they usually pass you on to a person you can understand.
I also avoid tolls whenever I can, why do I pay registration (road tax) and then have to pay tolls?

Try going from Newcastle to Goulburn avoiding toll roads and I'll bet that for the cost of a couple beers you'll use the tollways next time!

you may well be right jim but I do not go over that way much, we do not have any tolls over here in WA, I had better not say that to loud or some polly will pick up on it and claim it as his/her idea and we will then have toll roads.

By avoiding toll roads to go from Newcastle to Goulburn you will spend more in fuel than tolls. Using the M2 and M7 will cost you approx $10 and avoid about 50 or more traffic lights. Cheers David

Toll Calculators on the various Toll Company websites allow you to select type of vehicle, an entry and exit point then provide the cost for that section/s of the Tollway.

I'm with RovingDutchy and others - I drive from north of Sydney, to Canberra frequently - and stop in to see my sister in Windsor on the way. If I did it without using the toll roads I'd pay considerably more in fuel than the tolls cost me. I have an e-tag that works in every state that has toll roads (at least they tell me it does) so trying to find my way from southern Brisbane to northern Brisbane without using that toll bridge thing in the middle is something I haven't yet had to consider either.

I've been doing that trip long before the tollways were there and find it easy to go around them.
Not so easy for those passing through and don't know the area.

As I said in a previous thread on Toll roads, I have an inbuilt objection to them. But ...
I prefer to take the scenic/tourist route where there is that option.
The relative costs is not a consideration. So you can save a few dollars by cruising down yet another boring rat race highway, rather than working your way along a road with something to look at ... I know which one one I will choose.
Though, when I am pulling the van thru or by passing a Metropolis, even those that I am familiar with, I take the toll way if that leads me where I want to go. (Always out of peak hours of course).
To solve the issue of payment I have E-tags on both of my vehicles with auto top up .. so no problems there.

I did that after I knew I'd passed through the tunnel in Melbourne, but the tolls I didn't know about were already in the "infringement basket", and it doesn't take very long to get into the basket. They didn't connect my unpaid tolls to my new etag account, nor did they give me the opportunity to pay the missed tolls.
I didn't know I'd passed through a toll way. They look like the time cameras over our highways here in SA. I'd set the GPS to avoid them, but who knows.
For anyone not familiar with this revenue ripping nonsense, it can be very confusing. You eastern staters were probably bombarded with "education advertising" on the media. We have not. So to go through a toll way without prior warning or registration is a trap for the unwary.
There is minimal signage in Melbourne from my experiences. By the time you drive through the toll way it's too late. You've already offended in the eyes of the law. eg there is no sign after the toll way, (and I still don't really know what they look like,) advising you of the site or phone number to pay it.
In 2006 I gave my credit card details to someone in the toll industry in case I went through a tollway in Sydney, but as I never paid anything, I assume I didn't.

Hi Everyone
Thanks heaps for all your advice and comments. We had to open an account, in the end, as there seemed to be no other way around paying. Now there is yet another company that have our bank numbers... and can take out money whenever... Don't know why they can't have a day-pass, as is available in Melbourne... I suspect it is better for them and don't care whether the public is inconvenienced... And they get more money if people wait for their bill to arrive... Jay-Jay

Jay-Jay if this hadn't happened and you hadn't opened an account you would have been able to get a month pass BEFORE you next used the tollways. Pity you didn't know about it before you did the trip. Ah well. Now you won't have to worry about it. So far, we have had no problem having an account. I do make sure I check it thoroughly each time it comes in though. Cheers.

A word of warning.
To get through Sydney you actually travel on the M7 and the M2. Is you buy a Roam e-Pass it only covers you for the M7 and then you get a bill from Hills M2 for $2.75 plus $10.00 admin fee.
If you purchase the Visitors e-Pass is covers for all toll roads including Melbourne and Brisbane
I only found out by experience as its totally confusing

On our last trip to Melbourne we prepaid the toll at Echuca then due to lack of signage in amongst roadworks missed the start of city link totally. We found out that the prepaid is nonrefundable so from now on we will pay online after the trip.

We have a NSW RTA (now RMS) e-toll gadget. It does all states as far as I know and both M7 and M2 in Sydney. We know it does those because it costs us about $20 in tolls every time we go north to Newcastle to visit the kids and grandchildren. But it sure beats stopping at a million traffic lights to go through Sydney!!
