Following up on hiring a Britz Campervan for travelling around Kakadu/Katherine/Litchfield

Earlier this month I posted on this site regarding whether or not to hire a Campervan. Well we did. One of your members was very generous in ringing me and giving a few pointers that were very helpful. First of all we went for a Four Berth rather than a Three or Two. I think for this reason the marriage is still in tact. The company takes $7,500 straight out of your credit card for any damage to vehicle that may occur. Added to this they suggest you take out a policy to cover this amount. Your member suggested that the RACV have an insurance policy for what worked out to $140 to cover this rather than the company's $30.00 a day!!! She also suggested not to panic and buy lots of food in Darwin as there were other places along the way we could access. This worked out well. We cooked and also bought a few meals along the way. We topped up our supplies at Jabiru and Katherine and really didn't get left with lots, what we did we gave to fellow travellers. We didn't prebook at all and didn't have any problems getting into caravan parks or National Parks. This gave us great flexability. I enjoyed the national parks in that you were right on the spot for swimming and walking. We met lots of nice people along the way. If we had have decided to hire a car and then stay at motels (yuk) or cabins we certainly wouldn't have had the same experience. I would make the suggestion to anyone hiring a campervan to take masking tape (to stabilize drawers) and bubble wrap to keep things from banging. Our driver's cabin had access to rest of vehicle, which was convenient but noisy. It was fun to pull up and put the kettle on. Glad we did it this way. Thanks for all the input.

hi cazza, glad you had such a good time, the nice people here have all the answers and don't mind helping. we did a lovely holiday last year, took the train from Brisbane to Cairns, made the mistake of hiring a very small and cheap camper van to go further north to port douglas then slowly down to townsville, we ended up using it just for transport and stayed in motels and cabins. got rid of it in Townsville which we loved, lots of friendly people, had four days on beautiful magnetic island, great people here too, before flying back to brisbane. it was a great holiday (our retirement celebration holiday) but would have been better if we had been wiser in our choice of camper van company. at the moment we are sitting here in the cold miserable south coast, can't go anywhere as i sustained a very nasty injury in an accident,which explains the lack of capitals as i am typing with one hand! can't wait for it to be good again and we can travel and kayak once more!

Glad you enjoyed your retirement holiday, Maggie Island is a beautiful spot. Hope you soon recover from your accident and get mobile again.
