Travelled the 221km between Normanton and Burketown today, much of it was on unsealed roads. Had a layer of red dust inside the van. It appears to have come in through the grill in the bottom of the door. The grill that is there to let any stray gasses escape. I am thinking of taping it up while we are traveling on the road.
And yes, we did have the pressure hatch on the roof open.
Has any other nomads experienced this problem, or do most of you stick to the black top.
Maybe the best reply will get a slice of pavlova.
There was only a trickle going over the Leichhardt Falls, which was a disappointment .

Well, I think thats a good idea unless Mrs Kiwi-as doesn't mind dusting and shaking! Actually we had the same thing and only travelled over 30km red road.
Cheers

We tape that door bit over when on dirt roads . And leave the little vent in the top of the van open of course .
Keeps 99% ot the dust out .

A vent cover is a good idea, but I would suggest turning off your gas at the cylinder, and take the cover off again when you want to use the gas.

We have piece of cardboard which we always tape over the vent on the door. Usually put it on before departure and remove during set up at camp even when travelling on the blacktop.
When travelling on long stretches of dirt road we also tape over the Fridge vents, particularly the bottom one. We found heaps of red dust in the fridge cavity that would work its way out onto the van floor in front of the fridge, plus through a hole for the electrical wires into the adjoining cupboard, until I sealed that hole up.

I think we all have the problem - have found one of the most frustrating times is if you are driving on a dusty road into a free camp - someone coming the other way will not slow down - what do they think they are going to miss out on a spot ???
Have to get the cleaning rag out today and do a bit of cleaning after our trip from Boulia through Winton to Longreach - there is about 5k just before Winton where they are remaking the road, and there is a detour - red dust all the way!!!!
Hope you are having a good trip Kiwi-as - catch some fish!!!

Taped bit of cardboard here too. Still managed to get in a bit, that red stuff has a way of finding its way in anywhere.

You should also tape that grill up when going through deep water, for my suggestion I think I deserve the slice of pav, do you deliver?
Jules you MUST go to the Qantas 737 wing walk, if you have spare cash, its not cheap, I did not do it because I have had enough of aircraft throughtout my working life, but I still fly my flight sim.

Mate ! these pav's are so good you would have to clean the van & tug to receive the treat. No delivery as there would be a sprinkling of red dust on it & there is no justice in that LOL

Jim, I agree it would have to be an outstanding idea to qualify. Wombat, Lorraine says the "apartment" you have for us should have an oven if you won't a Pav U

Hmmm no oven, Hmmmm I will have a talk with the Director of Finance and she will have to talk to the War Office to see if we can afford to get one fitted.
I don't like pav anyway

Leave the roof vent open it will place a positive pressurize inside and keep the dust out or at least help along with the other suggestions

Thanks all for your replies, will have to divide the Pav into many slices
There was a van arrived in the caravan park this afternoon and they had all their vents taped up, and I thought "yes!, I'm on the right track". There was some seepage of dust in around some of the pipes coming up through the floor, so spent an hour or so this afternoon under the van with a tube of silicone. Will see how we get on when we leave here in a day or so as there is dust whichever direction we go.

Hi Kiwi-as
We just done the same trip 2 weeks ago, got dust {heaps} over the sink / work tops, must have come in from the back window, pressure hatch was open, from Burktown to Adels Grove via Gregory was also very, very dusty, then from Adels grove down to the Isa was just the same, never mind all cleaned up now & I wouldn't have gone any other way, dusty or not.
Cheers

Off to Lawn Hill to morrow probadly stopping in at Gregory Downs at least for the night. Hear the fishing can be all right there too. Talking of fishing, caught 12 archer fish this afternoon, and a queen fish yesterday, all nice eating. But not as nice as the fillet of barramundi a chap gave me the other day, it was simply superb . Even better than our N Z snapper, and I thought that was pretty good.
Well we are away in the morning after taping over all the air vents. Will give a report on results when we arrive.
