Our laptop died last week and we bought a new one and got the bloke in the shop to transfer our stuff from the old one. We have Windows 7, but we didn't buy microsoft outlook, we're just using Windows Live Mail. We've now found that although we can receive emails fine on the new laptop we can't send them - it gives an error 'The connection to the server has failed'. Unfortunately, the original failure happened just before we were due to leave Darwin, and we didn't find out about the email issue until too late, so now we can't go back to the shop for them to fix it. Does anyone have any idea what we can do to investigate this issue??

Might pay to PM Wombat,he's the resident internet expert. I seem to recall it's in the settings menu where you specify the host. Not too sure how you do go about it so maybe Wombat will know.
Good luck

Who is your ISP? They should be able to talk you through setting up your mail properly. If I have any problems sending or receiving mail through my BigPond address and I can't fathom it out I simply ring their help desk.

Hi there, so frustrating when technology fails you, I had the same problem when I renewed my laptop. Rather than just go with Windows, try gmail or hotmail. I went with gmail and its a free provider for email and simple to set up. Just google 'gmail' and follow the steps.
Thanks for all the assistance. We've been out of range for a few days which hasn't helped. Got to Alice Springs today and as suggested rang our ISP (Australiaonline). After nearly an hour waiting on the phone ('Your call is important to us') it took the guy about 3 minutes to figure out that the port allocated for sending was wrong, we changed it as he specified and now everything is fine.

Hi Guys, I had this problem, so i opened a gmail eail address and clicked the box to import all mail from other Addresses, It works really well for me and it has lots of things attached to gmail pluss a chat program which you can use your camera or not with family and friends, I have not looked back sinse doing this. Also Gmail is free..and very easy to set up and it imports everything for you..
