Hi All,
Well it's 3 months today till we leave on our gap year as grey nomads.
I am starting to look at the route that we could take. We are thinking that we might head from Bris towards the Murray and into SA, getting down to the coast by about mid Feb.
My biggest worry is finding campsites over Xmas/New Year/School Hols i.e., end of Dec and all through Jan. What's it like out there during this time of the year?
Any suggestions would be gratefully accepted! We like to Free Camp as much as possible and we are travelling with our 2 fur kids.
Looking forward to meeting some of you out there on the road!
Thanks
Chris and Peter

Remember at that time of year it will be Hot! Best places are in the mountains or on the coast. The New England Highway has some lovely spots, the Highlands in Southern NSW and Vicoria likewise... the coastal areas are likely to be very busy then.

You can always rest up at Greens lake on your way through, just south of Echuca, if you are going that way. Huge amount of room and great for the dogs.

Green's Lake sounds really nice and i've added it to the list - does it get really busy at that time of the year?
What are some other suggestions for cooler/quieter spots on the mainland?
Cheers Chris

It does get busier in the school holidays and New Years Eve last year was huge. But the area is very spacious and room for everyone, We normally camp along the water line, some others camp up in the trees. Or over the back in amongst the other trees. There are all sorts of camping areas in a wide space. I have been there when I was one of only 3 campers. Then I've been there when there were they estimate 2,000 on NYE and everything in between.

Thanks Happy Wanderer, sounds like it will be really nice. I'm counting the days now - so over getting everything ready at work to hand over!
