Hi all
I am heading to longreach mid 2013 for my first jaunt in my caravan after 50 years of working I have no idea how I will go with the whole thing probably very poorly i suspect but I guess I will learn a lot along the way if any one is interested in coming along please feel welcome I think all the support I can muster would be great especially some experienced ones I know it is a long way off but I need a bit of time to get organised and arrange time away from work I will be starting from the southern highlands and heading north via dubbo all welcome can you help?

Hi Pete, Congratulations on reaching the 50 year mark. Like you, I retired after slaving for 50 years the last 20 with the same firm! AND I have not regretted the decision once.
Do a few short weekend trips away and become more familiar with your rig, it's capabilities and your own. A couple of trips under your belt and you will have a lot more confidence. Planning is optional once you have started out in earnest. Keep it simple and realistic and keep reading this forum. Plenty of help and information is readily available from those who have already hit the road.

Welcome Marto1944 - start taking some small weekend trips, decide what you need and what you don't - minimilistic is the way to go - if you have some time between November and possibly next Easter - head down to Greens Lake - in Victoria I know - but you will find a lot of Grey Nomads there - it is a free camp, with toilets and water - it is about 50k south of the border, near Elmore - between Shepparton and Bendigo - heaps of room - and some of the Grey Nomad crew tie a grey ribbon on their aerials to identify themselves, there will be vehicles with stickers as well - easy to find them. Just go and say hello - they will make you welcome.
It is in the Camps Australia Wide book - under Elmore - the CAW is known as "the bible" to the travellers out here in the playground.
Look for one of our members on here called "Yeoeleven" - and read his blog - he is the most inspiring person you will meet - his blog is wonderful, and his photos amazing.

Good advice here.
I strongly support the suggestion of a few "shake-down" trips to sort out your needs and to get some experience before heading out on a big trip. You will also get an idea of what preparation and "homework" you need to do before heading off.

Thanks for the good info yep it sounds all too easy but I think the hardest thing is actually doing it hell I spent over 50 years being happy with my work situation and now i am as anxious as all hell i guess as we get older we are not as confident as we were when we were young we just dont like to get out of our comfort zone I guess if i have a few little goes at it first i may be come a little more comfortable about it
