As a newbie to the Grey Nomads arena I could do with some help.

We'd like to get a tent for the side of our Merc Sprinter so that we can leave it set up in the Caravan park whilst we go sight seeing.

Has anyone got a suggestion to make about a suitable tent for this purpose?

Have a look at what this lady has, hers is obviously meant for a higher vehicle, but still effective, has suction cups which stick to the roof on one side, available from Anaconda and BCF camping stores and possibly others;

Not suitable to go off sight seeing though as it would have no support on one side.  

I also would like something to use as an awning and would be great to leave in place when using the vehicle. Problem for me is that with one person it is difficult to use the awning suggested because I believe getting them back folded in the bag is difficult if not impossible for one person.

To put up and cart an oztent for me takes away the convience of just being able to pull up the van and your camped. I'm looking at the lighter nylon options or just a tarp for those reasons. I'm very interested in and appreciate the suggestions too.

Have a look at the Oztent range Keith. Not cheap but pretty innovative and well made. If you search a few forums you will get a lot of opinions and good info.They have several sizes and a lot of extensions etc. to adapt to most situations.

 Thanks for your comments Oxley, I thought you hit the nail on the head with the RV comments and an hour to pack up isn't an attractive option.

we used an oz tent on our trip last year in tassie, as time goes by you get better at putting them up and taking them down, we now have a camper trailer but i still use the oz tent when i go land sailing i can put it up by myself in about 15 mins,,,it can be free standing if you want but i'd peg it down saw one take off in a gust of wind once,,, if i could work out how to use one as a land yacht sail i would, looks like they catch the wind really well............
