I think i personaly prefer the carvan/motorhome thing...
I guess too it really depends on how you are set up..
caravan parks seem to be more freindleir than motels
and you have what you need with you ie in the van
where as motels unless you really pay for it !
also I know the inital out lay of the motor home - caravan etc is the
most expensive part but it does pay for it self when at caravan parks
ie a park site most you'd pay is $30 pn for instance where as a motel
even for one person your looking at around $70 or more posibly cheaper if
you stay in cabins at caravan parks...
I think for me i do like the caravaning better, once you get yourself set up the way you wany!!

I stayed in a serviced appartment for a week once and made the mistake of looking under the bed, used condoms and goodness knows what else. I find it hard to stay anywhere now except my van, with my own sleeping bag or linen, cups, cutlery.
Cost wise weighing up the cost to purchase, ongoing maintenance, and extra fuel of a sizeable MH you may find the motels cheaper depending on how often you travel. A smaller van you use as your main vehicle is quite different.
If you freecamp with either the cost gets much lower on both MH and Campervan. Caravan would be similar I guess.

I had a friend who could never understand carravanning, " We prefer motels, and the more stars the better"
My response was, well, if I like nice linen, I take it with me, as well as perfect pillows. I have nice glasses to drink from and nice coffee cups. The difference is, I know it is all clean, well washed and hygenic. I like to know who slept (and dribbled) on the linen and pillows..... and don't mention those "f" words - fart, f..ked, frew up.
I don't live out of a suitcase either.
We don't travel together as I refuse to lower my standards regardless of the number of stars the motel has.

I've only stayed in a few motels and really hated it... I would much prefer free camping even in a tent... altho, now we have the bus is sure is nice as we have most of the comforts of home right there at all times.... my sister is a 5star travel person even when she 'camps' its in the best cabin at a 5 star caravan park or similar..... we took them camping in tents once... OMG! what a laugh!!! I think we spent the entire time giggling.... they took a street type lamp that lit up the entire area, fairy lights around everything, a kick ass generator and built an enormous fire. hmmm come to think of it, we've not taken them camping since......

euwh yuck. I know what you mean. I have similar discussions with my sister who doesnt like camping. I like to know that everything in my van is mine, clean and always with me. She says instead of what we have invested in the van, we could do a lot of travelling. But what price for comfort and peace of mind. Thats not counting the sheer joy of being away in the van.
I just need to find her a new man who loves camping and he can convert her lol

One thing you all forget, when you are to old to run around with your van, you can sell it and you get most of your money back.
The other party in motels spent all the money and it is gone.

I'm the same as the others Milo. Like having my own things, plus I'm not tied to a time-table. Have to be out by a certain time in the morning in a Motel. In the Campervan I can sleep in as long as I like, and can pull up anytime, and not have any too close neighbours.

..................... and its not counting the fact that when you're done travelling, you can sell up and get some money back. Try doing that with your aiplane ticket and your motel bill.

We met a couple who had returned from a cruise... it was less than 3 weeks and they'd spent almost what our caravan cost!!
When you talk about 5-star places, I remember our tent which had a "star window" in the roof, and when camping outback we had million-star accommodation!
