We are in Cairns at the moment, however camping on our son's front lawn, till after the school holidays.
Not a good time to be in Cairns due mainly to the School Holidays and greedy delevopers, who have snapped up a lot of the parks in the northern beaches for development. The sad thing most that were sold to developers, and some of the developers, have gone bust, leaving half built units and scared land. Trinity Beach is a good example of that.
The only two I know of in the northern beaches, is the one at Palm Cove which is council run and Ellis Beach privately owned. However both are 25 kms + out from the city. That is a plus as far as I am concerned.
We were at Ellis yesterday just visiting, check out our blog below, and there seems to be a few spots available, however that can change daily. We stayed there a couple of years ago, and right on the beach. However you have the main drag also running directly along the boundaries of the park and can be quite noisy if you can't get a beachside site. The benefits are close to the pub, and right on the beach. negativities as above. Price per night, hope you have plenty of disposable income.
Had a look at the Palm Cove site also then other day and it was bulging at the seams.
I think you have answered your own statement about the other venues available.
Unfortunately Cairns is not all that RV friendly.
Hope that helps
Cheers & beers

Just out of town on the south side is Barrier Reef Tourist Park in Edmonton, www.barrierreeftouristpark.com.au and a little further south you could try the Fishery Falls Caravan Park (We liked this one) just south of Gordonvale. www.fisheryfalls.com.au
Cheers, Ozjohn.

the Cascades caravan park is very good we stayed for a 2 weeks in July this year and found it to be very friendly and very well maintained also free B-B-Q once a week I think its a Big 4 park and from memory rates were below the $30 mark. its also quiet and about 15klm west of Cairns city with shopping centre nearby.

Hi Al, we stayed at Cool Waters CP. a little closer to the city, price is ok and availability would be good now as many have left to go south. We were there twice to catch up with friends and family and suited us.
Agree that Cairns not RV friendly almost no free camp under 60 Kms from Cairns.
Enjoy B & C

We stayed at the Cascades in September and found it very good. A little out of Cairns but close to shops ,Station for the train to Kuranda and the Skyway thingo. Lovely people and the staff excellent. Even helped us onto the site. Good clean amenities, pool and BBQ area. In a lovely setting too. About the average tariff not too expensive.
