after leaveing Hughenden and some 212 Kms we have arrived at Winton at a pleasant 35oc. Was a busy time on the road with a total of 7 vehicles encountered on the road, must have been peak traffic time according to one of the shoppers in Winton. Its an interesting little town but shows signs of being a bit neglected. We will spend tomorrow here before moving onto Longreach.
Take on the road everyone.

we went to the outdoor cinema at Winton - a real step back in time - lots of laughs at the old 'ads' and movie reels. Stayed on 'Mistake creek' and 'the long waterhole' before staying with friends on "Weona" -a station on the way out to Opalton 85k's from Winton

I read somewhere that the Gregory Hotel has undergone some reno work. There's a free camp behind it, but the shower and toilet were very badly neglected. I wonder if it was part of the reno.

Hi Jenny and Barry, we went to the outdoor movies tonight as well. It was a great time seeing how they put it all together with the equipment that was around at the time. Really a special feel for the old stuff. Worst part I remember some of the items that they ran, scary.

Hello Beth54, the hotel you mentioned has and I think still is undergoing renovations. I did not get to see the area as a whole that you speak of but they did seem to be still working out in that area. They seem to be very slowly restoring the main strip of the town. Will take awhile but worth the effort.

There has been some work done st the North Gregory . A new toilet / shower block on the left as you go through the back gate .
New and clean now , but pretty shoddy work . The shower water runs out under the door instead of the drain hole .
But at least it's clean .

Briche - if you didn't get to the back of the North Gregory Pub - you woul dhave missed "Arno's Wall" - worth a look - it starts at the back of the pub - really interesting stuff.

Winton is one of our favourite stops.
We stay at the Long Waterhole and its so serene.
Love the coffee and pies at the Tourist Info and just the place in general.
I do like Arnos Wall, its cool

Yes, Arnos wall is a must see. Amazing!
We intended to stay at the free camp at the back of the Gregory, but the toilet & shower were so pitiful, we stayed at the Waltzing Matilda CP. It was great, but maybe the long waterhole would have been a better choice moneywise.

Its a lovely spot Beth, just need your own toilet/shower is all.
We unhook the van and go into town and never have a problem with things being taken.

Yep - I agree - the Long Waterhole is a great spot - as is the spot just behind visitors centre where you can get water etc., or park with a van on the back - nice town.

Don't miss going out to Lark Quarry from Winton to see the dinosaur footprints. Absolutely awe inspiring.

Also Opalton - very different place - looks like no-one at all lives there, until the lady in the shop (?) has a market day, and they come out of the woodworks, or say potholes - but I picked up a very nice bit of opal near the airstrip.
