We are just about to go to Tasmania for a month, we have Optus mobiles and Optus wifi mobile broadband.
We have been told that Optus is not available in Tasmania, however, on checking the coverage maps online it looks like both companies have similar coverage.
We would be pleased if anyone who has travelled to Tassie recently would let us know what their experience was with broadband and mobile coverage.
Thanks

I had an Optus mobile in Tas, I only had a signal in and near Hobart, Launceston, and on the Bruny Is Ferry!

I spent 2 months in a caravan in Tassie recently & I had Telstra mobile & Telstra Mobile Internet. From my experience with other travellers, you can forget Optus, Vodaphone, Primus etc as Telstra will give more coverage than all the others put together. I had no problems but heard plenty of moans & groans about other telecommunication providers. Tassie is a wonderful place to visit, but hasn't really embraced the 20th centruy yet, so don't expect too much with regards to the 21st century.

The above comments represent the opinion of a single traveller. Those of us with two heads still revel in the 18th Century !!

One of the nice old-fashioned things we found about Tassie is they have public phone boxes, and they work!

We have had 6 weeks in Tassie in July and had Telestra. Most of the time we have reception but other friends had optus and vodaphone, no good

We too have Telstra, and had no problems in Tassie or anywhere else we go - it seems if you want reasonably good coverage when travelling Telstra is the way to go.

You need Telstra in Tasmania, especially when you get off the main highways and into small towns. Optus is improving but hasn't got the coverage like Telstra has. Forget Vodafone.. I'd suggest you stick with your Optus Sims and if you are finding it difficult to make/receive calls, change to Telstra. If you change, you can keep your same number.

Thanks for your replies, last time we were in Tassie there was no Optus coverage. We had one Telstra phone then but now both are Optus, however, we think we will try our Optus equipment and if we find the reception too bad we can always buy a Telstra Sim while we are down there.

A Tasmanian told us yesterday that Telstra is the only decent one to use - all the others just don't work - We have Telstra for internet and one phone, and one Optus phone - done us well so far.
