Anyone been on the road to Mendooran rest stop, Camps 5 #435 on the road between Gilgandra and Dunedoo, please.

Not that particular spot but....
My first solo trip was from Port Stephens to Coonabarabran through/near that area. I stayed at the lovely little caravan park at coolah,very cheap. Almost got to the black stump but turned off to Binnaway.The secondary roads are the way to go, I loved being the only traveller in sight, it gave me a cense of calm, enjoyment and the determination to plan other trips to see more of that area. Wish I was there now.
The caravan park in Cassillis looked pretty nice too.
The next time travelling to Dubbo, I stayed at Dunedoo caravan park. Not a good spot, between the main road and the railway line, a bit noisy to say the least.

Probably a bit late now, but I live in the area and all the major roads (Gilgandra, Dubbo, Gulgong, Coolah, Merriwa, Coonabarabran via Mendooran) to Dunedoo are good sealed roads. Basically the only one that I believe to remain unsealed, but still a fair road, is Wellington to Dunedoo.
Helen, down around Mudgee, Gulgong area is well worth a look as well. Wineries, lots of history, scenic, etc. I'e lived here for twenty years & still enjoy the area (about to become a summertime visitor to family in the area as we're hoping to become full time nomads around Christmas.

Thanks Darrell, It's good to know the roads are ok and I'm happy to find someone who can help me to learn more about the area and all those wonderful places. Good luck you two, in your travels. Let me know if you are near Port Stephens any time.
Many many many years ago when the kids were little, we camped at a place called Dunn Swamp, between Kando and Rylstone. It was a beautiful area near a great expance of water. I remember waking up early and seeing the mist floating across the water, it was a magical sight. The camping was basic, just toilets, no water/tap, no showers and was in the hands of State Parks then. I would like to return there one day.
Would you know if the area is still State park or now National Park. My companion (Ruby the dog) stops me from entering National Parks. In the last year, I have met new friends that recently sold their property at Dungog. This is possibly a question I could ask them. But thinking again, they are not campers.

Eureka, from what I can find it seems to indicate it is in Wollemi NP - described as on the edge of 'Wollemi NP' and address is Wollemi NP. State Park or National Park are the same thing in NSW now. Pity - but you could ask a NP office. It's 'Dunns Swamp' near Kandos. -

No dogs permitted at Dunn's Swamp according to Camps 6, Helen. Had to look it up as I'd never taken any notice the couple of times I've been there. Cudgegong River Park at the Mudgee end of Burrendong Dam is also a nice spot and dogs are permitted on leash. Pretty sure camping fees (dump point, flush toilets, hot showers, kiosk, etc) are still $9 per person per night
