I've wasted too many years doing things others thought I should, but no longer. It's your life, you should live it how you want to. Especially under those circumstances.
I'm going to sell my house, get a smaller place for when I can no longer drive, and then get on the road until that happens. I'm 71.
Cheers,
Sheba.

How did family and friends react to that?
Want to sell the house and bugger off into the great outdoors but gettin some resistance from one friend. My kids are great with it but my friend is of the mindset that you don't sell your asset!
What say you all?
My partner has bowel cancer and having chemo and we have decided we don't want to work 6 days a week and not spend time together, so.... After chemo and further surgery is over we are going to hit the road.
Anyone else done this?

Isn't the decision yours and not your friend's? Do want you feel is best for you. Maybe buying a smaller asset would be safe.

My heart tears two ways here and its nothing to do with your friend.
I am the type who has to have somewhere to come home to. Thats just me.
You know, and your partner, what you both want. Listen to your gut, it never lies.
As Neilruth says, you could buy a smaller asset. Even a block with a live in shed perhaps?
At the end of the day, have no regrets.

Oh it is definitely not my friends decision but I am disappointed in her reaction!
I will still have a nest egg after buying car and caravan! And I have great earning potential... Can always go work again :(!
Although full time work is not on the agenda!
We want to enjoy each others company after six months of ****ty chemotherapy!!

We are all individuals and decide whats best for US. We are downsizing (I darnt stand still at present lest I be sold) from 12 acres to 2 (subdividing) and building a large shed with shower, toilet and vanity and laundry tubs and a place to store the van whilst we live in it till we build the granny flat. A place to call home. All plans etc in with council. Kids are happy with us going, but grandkids want to come and visit on school holidays.

Go for it, Buffy! It's YOUR life and you need to live it YOUR way. Your friend may have good reasons for her view but they are just that - HER reasons (or his, sorry for making an assumption there).

I say go for it too Buffy. Its what you want to do that important. The doubters put my plans behind the eightball too. If I hadn't listened to them a few years ago I would have had a very nice modern motorhome and been on the road for a few years by now. Unfortunately I had family saying "You can't do that" For all sorts of reasons. Now they say They are so proud of me for getting out there and having a go. Just do it, I say.

I intend to sell up in Melbourne and take off. My family is fine with the idea and I will look for a new asset up the coast a bit where the weather is warmer, so I will travel and look around. I say go for it and enjoy your travels.

a real friend would have an opinion but would support your decision regardless of the difference of opinion,, besides whose house is it anyway....a real friend will still be friend regardless,,,, thats what i think anyway.....

If I had my way I would sell everything tomorrow regardless of what others may think, hit the road and take it one sunrise at a time. I am working hard to convince my Wife and somtimes she's onside sometimes not.. To many pressures to keep the home, all the stuff we have aquired etc.. but to me its just become stuff.. somthing else to worry about .. somthing else to fix and find a spot for..
I dream of devoiding myself of everything that requires any level of responsibility on my part and that doesn't contribute directly to my enjoyment of what ever time I have left on this planet.

Hello. This is an existing time for you both. We also were unsure about selling everything so we had a trial run and went for an extended stay in our van in a caravan park at the beach to see if we would like this life full time. NOW can't wait to get rid of all "the stuff". Have started selling lots of things in the house and it is quite liberating. I no longer want to clean a house and strop is over mowing, gardening and maintaining a home. We met lovely people in the caravan park, every day someone to talk to. Don't get that in our house. Comparing the two it seems the house is depressing when we hardly see any neighbours apart from them going to and from work in their cars. Choice is a nobrainer for us now - sell up, make new friends, see new places - suddenly you will both feel alive........yippy get in the car and go,go,go.

I say do what you think best! I am of the mindset that it would be good to have somewhere to retreat to if sick of travelling, now whether that is a caravan park, someone's property, or a home, each to their own opinion. Good luck!

The above comment has finally convinced me to become a true Nomad. The dictionary definition is "A member of a people who have no fixed residence but move from place to place usually seasonally and within a well-defined territory".
I was initially disappointed to learn that a very small percentage of people on this forum are true Nomads. After reading a lot of posts I have found that many members have regretted not becoming true nomads but retaining a fixed residence.
I hate housework, mowing the lawn and generally making the place look nice for visitors and the neighbours. Speaking of neighbours, I hate the ones on one side and the other house is vacant (which is why someone set fire to their backyard on Saturday ), which nearly set fire to mine !!!
Being a true Nomad there would be minimal monthly bills. No Rates, water rates, electricity, insurance, home phone etc.
I would not miss out on anything I have now. VAST tv and an internet plan less than the $90 I am paying now.
Now it is time to research my new home (hopefully something that will outlast me.)
As Mike sort of said," I dream of waking up, where ever I am in this great country, without a CARE IN THE WORLD."

STUFF is the enemy. Get rid of all your STUFF it just makes you rationalise the need to own a place to store it !!!

Young, you have for ever to live,
Old, you have a use by date,
Get out and live it before the use by date comes,
