Hi - I had posted this in solos, in answer to a post, but thought this might be a better spot - and I can just keep adding to it - ok - here I paste
"We are staying at a free camp just outside Penguin - it is not in the Camps 5 - maybe in no. 6 - nice little spot beside the sea, just off the road, looks like a life saving club premises - self contained vehicles only, no tents - no facilities - we were heading to No. 231 in Camps 5 - Hall Point - but this seems ok, probably much the same, about five others here.
Left Sheffield to have a look at Devonport - walked round there for a few hours - there is a camp at Coles Beach - $10 - asphalt - nothing else, decided to keep going, one good thing about daylight saving - still broad daylight! Devonport is a very nice place - plenty of shops, and all dominated by the Spirit of Tasmania on the other side of the Mersey River (they have a ferry crossing the river - couldn't stop singing "Ferry, cross the Mersey" -
The road here was great - divided highway most of the way, we stopped at a lookout called Braddons Lookout - well worth driving the 2k up for - amazing views of the ocean, mountains and paddocks!!! Met a nice couple, they had a look at the motorhome, and now they want one when they retire!!!
Where tomorrow takes us is anyones guess - so much to see and do - strange names of places too - Dismal Swamp, Nowhere Else, Nook, The Dip - have fun imagining how they get their names."
Penguin is a lovely little town Jules, lap it it up and enjoy. If you are heading to the West Coast Straun is a great village and a must is the Gordon River Cruise and Wilderness Railway trip, just fantastic.

Yep - gunna have a look at Penguin tomorrow - do penguins come in here at all? Want to do it all - so many things, don't know where to start, so we just came up to Devonport and started heading west - who know what we will find???? LOots of good stuff I reckon!!!

Was great to meet Billiee and Jules, had a great long chat and learnt heaps, the wee helping hand leaving was no hassle. 17mm of rain this time of the year is great to have.

Penguin is great isn't it?! I love all the penguins one finds on bins, light poles etc! The place you are at (or maybe you have moved on again by now?) is a still working surf club - that is if it is the one right on the beach?! I scored really nice weather there and the beach was just lovely, they do good food in the club house too!
Definately keep your eyes open for Boat Harbour! Dismal Swamp is part of the Tarkine Wilderness area, currently there are mining exploration leases going on in that area....see the area now while you still can. Stanley is interesting too and there is a beach, an independant camp area and a lot of (to my mind) overpriced eateries.... Keep on keeping on there is something to do see eat around every corner in Tassie!

Annie - crossing was good - we have moved on - but Preservation Point was nice - the surf club is still working, with a restaurant there as well. We moved over to Yolla from there to meet up with Florinhill, stayed there the night, he cooked us a nice meal, - good food, good company - will be back to visit him and wife again.
Currently sitting on the wharf at Wynyard -
And Blaze - yes it is a lovely spot isn't it - and Bob and Rhonda are a lovely couple - we were made very welcome - though we needed the help of the tractor to get out this morning, rained overnight - motorhomes (front wheel drive) do NOT like wet grass, especially on a hill!!!

Jules I may be too late answering this thread as you have moved on but yes, penguins come in at Penguin. We stayed with friends at Sulphur Creek just down the road from Penguin. Our friend took us over the road to the beach at night and we just sat on the sand and waited - and the penguins came in. Not in their hundreds like Phillip Is in Vic but they were worth the wait.

hi, go to Mole Creek near Deloraine. Beut pub with good meals. nearby is caves and my goodness the caves are an absolute must see. spectacular.
