What do people do for a dump point when camped in The Otways area?
We were at Johanna Beach Campground for 6 nights, doing day trips all over the area, and there was nowhere to dump our porta loos. There are only portable toilets at the beach itself, so no dumping there.
We carted them all over the mountains one day thinking we'd find a dump point, only to have to dump them in a public toilet!
On our way through Apollo Bay today we saw the sign for a dump point at the entrance to the showgrounds CP, so used that. We assumed it was a public dump point but apparently it's not. A lady came out and went crook at bil. I'd already been and gone.
Apparently the only ones are in CP's and there's a fee if you're not staying there.

Looks like the post I made to this thread a while ago rattled someones cage, it's been deleted, here's a modified version.
I would never dump my MH waste in a public toilet (Napisan or not) unhygienic and antisocial, how would you handle a spill? it can happen.
During our travels around OZ with a little forward planning I have never been faced with the situation of not being able to empty the cassette when necessary.

If you use the napisan method it is OK to dump into a public toilet but not with he chemicals.
Some one from the CMCA may be able to give you a list of the dump points and perhaps a POI list for your GPS.
As I am no longer a member my list would be old. I resigned when they closed their forum.

Not sure about that comment re toilets. The CP people here were ballistic yesterday because someone had emptied theirs in the drain outside the toilet (that maybe because the toilets are locked or just seriously disgusting people) Had a discussion with them about why we cant empty into toilets. Apparently it is not the chemicals as such but more the fact that the toilet pipes are not big enough to cope with the flood of stuff coming from the cassette and so the pipes get blocked. Especially when all the toilet paper has not had enough time to break down.
I was tempted to suggest their dump point needed to be 'public' - you have to ask them to use it and they go open the lid - not sure where it is situated. I guess the illegal dumper didnt want to wait until the office opened to ask.

That is a real challenge Beth and sorry to hear about it to be honest.
It is frustrating not being able to have the simplest of conveniences isn't it.
I have been through towns in NSW where they have removed theirs, Murrurundi being one of them.
The Camps Australia Wide book also lists public dump points. It's unlikely that there would be public dump points at every little "one-horse" town so a bit of forward planning may be necessary.

A lot more .
Ask at the nearest information centre .
The other alternative is a shovel . Just dig a hole , empty the **** , and cover it . Out in the bush of course .

It is ok to dump in a toilet that is connected to a town sewerage system. Don't dump in a septic tank system. The chemicals in your cassette with affect the bacteria in the septic system and cause the system to break down. Of course the problem for the unenlightened is how do you know if a toilet is connected to sewerage or a septic tank...

We stayed at my son's house in suburban Melbourne, and found that if we went to the point where the loo came through the wall, there was a screw off cap, and we emptied into that, which goes to the main sewage system - worked ok for us. Have been at a caravan park, where the same sort of thing was utilised by the park owners, they provided a hose to wash out with - thinking back the park was on a major highway, but quite a way from the nearest town, so don't know if it was a septic system or sewage.

Forward planning is needed, we have emptied even though only half full, because not sure when the next one will be available, especially as we tend to travel to no plan mostly, or a very loose plan anyway.
Some caravan parks willcharge $5 or so to dump - and the Kyogle Showground in northern NSW charge non paying users $5 as well. (No charge if you camp there)

Rod you stirrer, yes, I'm having a good time, but when one is carrying one cassette and one porta loo in the back of one car for a whole day, trying to find a place to deposit them, one gets a little irked.
It's okay, I'm over it now.

Big gorilla, I'm enlightened! I've lived with septic systems in the past.
How can one plan ahead when you stay somewhere for 6 nights? I must add that because of my medical condition, I have to go when I have to go. No time to walk up the hill to the portable toilets.
We had emptied earlier in SA but once we hit Vic, Warnambool was the only place with a dump point all along the coast or anywhere in The Otway area. I wouldn't call Colac a one horse town, and we really expected there to be one there. The ladies at the info centre were very nice though. Let us fill up our water containers.
Jules, the CP at Casterton had a system like that. It was very handy.

Yes, I looked at them too. The only one on the GOR was Lorne. And that was way after Johanna.

We'll just have to be more aware as we head east. For the next week we'll be in CP's in Melbourne, so no problems.

Firefly the murrurundi dump point was moved into the showgrounds owing to the lady who lived across the street from its previous location objecting every time someone used it.
The entry to the sg is opposite the post office (look for the dp sign) or you can turn right at the next intersection (if going north) and go in the back way which has a very easy approach angle.
I have used this when returning home many times in both locations.

Thanks for that Frank, I thought it odd.
We used it last year and this August, pulled up to find it gone.
Would have been a good idea for a re direction at the old point as many would still stop to try to use it.
