Cost me 97.00 of which 10.00 was for the points. The rest for checking her out.
When I had bits replaced in Biggenden points were one that was replaced about 2 months ago now.
I am sure this is the 3rd time, which check my receipts tomorrow as sure they had already been replaced here in Echuca when I had the same problem.
Son wondered if there was a problem causing them to burn out, but mechanic here said there has been a faulty lot come in from China, one car he had in had to be replaced 4 times before it came right.
She is running smooth again, and hopefully she will stay that way. Just me to come right now and I will be on my way to Greens Lake

The usual reason for burning out the popints is either leaving the ignition on for extended periods of time (over 1 minute)
or
a crook condenser in the disy.
and I suppose a bad batch of points

Hi HW Have your condensor changed next time (tell them you require that to be done. Cost should be $10- $15. Also have some check that you have a resistor wired into your ignition sysytem. They start on 12 volt and when your key returns to the on postion aposed to the start postion it will reduce the run voltage to 9 volts. You can print this out and any compatent mechanic will understand cheers blaze

Thanks for that guys, will get all that printed out and if it happens again will definitely get the condensor replaced and check out the resistor .

I am no mechanic but another thing you may like to get checked next time is the distributor itself they do wear out, but that will be expensive so hope it is not that.

Hi;
I would also check your coil, it may have shorted turns. Check that your ballist resister is of the correct raiting for your coil and also is correctly wired up.

Coil was replaced about 2 months ago valiant but will be taking notes on anything suggested here. If I have to replace them all again I will be doing that.

One of the big problems with points is that many people don't clean new points before they fit them as they are packaged with a light coating of lubricant to protect them, if this is not cleaned off the will burn black in a short time & there lies a problem.

what sort of car i know ive seen it but you know how it is if i could find a dissy for it i will do a rebuild on it as some of those old toyotas do have old age syndromes my old acce i did rebuilt it and never looked back till it went bang
i dont think its got a ballast resistor
if you can send me the motor details i will see what i can do as your only down the road sorta
trouble is finding a competent old time mechanic

I know what you mean about finding a good mechanic Graeme. When I had my Lucy's service done in Hay, at a non-dealership, he suggested changing to a 'real' mechanic. For a start the dealership is so much dearer. I have 2 ex husbands who are mechanics, one I wouldn't bother finding, and the other isn't in the trade any more. But a friend suggested someone in my neck of the woods, so I'll be chasing him up when I return home.

Graeme, Shes a 1981 Toyota Hiace of which I had the motor rebuilt this time last year. It seems I have bought 3 lots of points so far, so will check with the local mechanic when I get a chance. (About a condensor etc) I'm down in Echuca at the moment, not due back up north till after Xmas all going well. Mileage would be well over 200,000
Beth, when I had my Hyundai I always used the dealership until the 5 yr warranty ran out, after that a good mechanic who charged about 1/4 of the price.

Yes, they're certainly a ripoff!
The warranty is still covered if you use an acredited mechanic, I'm told. Lucy is covered for the 5 years too, but extends to 8 years if I stay with the dealership. But I don't think it's worth it. They quoted me $600 for a major service and this bloke did it for just under $200! AND they were doing services every 5,000kms, but he said it doesn't need to be done until 10,000. He had no reason to tell be stories either, as I'd never go to him again. (In Hay)
I reckon with the work that's already been done to Myrtle, it's better to keep her. The old mileage doesn't count when you have a new motor. My old Laser had over 400,000 on her, but she'd had a recon motor done.
