the dashboard cameras? I have just set one up & beleive it will be a great asset if ever in a situation where proof is required.
This unit runs the normal video plus it has GPS tracking , google map & G-sensor.
When you play back a trip via your computor you have three windows on the screen.
1st. video + overall distance & driving time ,speed, time & date & Distance into trip. 2nd google maps showing the trip taken with the route highlighted, a icon follows this route in conjunction with the video including GPS co-ordinates, . 3rd is a graph of the speed for the entire trip & altitude. The G-sensor will auto lock the frame in the event of an accident so over recording will not happen.
There are many settings in this unit as to quality of picture, size of files, still shots, auto on/off with ignition.inbuilt microphone & speaker. Takes up to a 32GB card & auto deleats one file at a time when card is full to enable continous recording.

Yep,I have fitted a Blackvue HD Dash Cam. As above, gps location, update to Google Maps. Also has Parking Mode where even if I am not in the car an event can be recorded.
Here are a couple clips from a recent trip, either of which could have ended in an insurance claim and I would have had some evedence.
quite a range of cameras that seem to be good quality, lots of dealers around the country selling them and the prices are pretty good.
I am looking at buying the ITB100HD at $369.00 seems good value especially with a movement sensor function for when you are parked I could also use that on the caravan as a security camera.

At the Batemans Bay caravan and camping show they were selling these for $130. I picked up the same one for $39 on EBay and dam it's good, being ex highway patrol these things have there advantages and after retiring never thought I would be putting anything like a camera in my car. On the the job they are a god send especially when things end up in Court, and the Magistrate asks the defendant if they have viewed the police in car video prior to making a plea. It is a shame that it has come to this but for little outlay it could save you thousands. Stay safe on the roads and enjoy this wonderful country.

I run a VisionDrive camera and it shows the same as JC except the bottom screen is in figure's not graph form, it also has a rear camera, and when played back on your computer will show one front screen view or both front and back and map at the same time, speed and gps figures are at the bottom of the screen, price $660 but you can get these ones for $460 with lest features.
I am waiting for the New Navman released on the 1st Dec.JB Hifi/BigW Dick Smiths etc.
It's called ther Mivue358 around the $200 mark,it has a 5 megapixel camera and looks to be good value. Not as many bells and whistles as the previously mentioned dashcams but if your budget won't stretch to the $600 it's agood alternative. They also have a Mivue338 which has a lesser megapixel camera. It's in Dick Smiths now at $149.
They look like a good idea and I have heard of people selling their videos of stupid road behaviour to the TV stations.
No affiliation to any companies selling these.
I would like the Visiondrive version but the budget is not there at the moment.

the VisionDrive also does the shopping car park operation, (forgot about that) if you stop anywhere the camera is left on and is on standby, if somebody hits your car (with theirs, or moves your car in anyway) the camera starts recording 15 secs before it was hit, and you set it for how long you want it to record within the camera options.
The $660 unit is HD, great for reading number plates at a distance.
There are a lot of cheap ones around, like everything else you get what you pay for, having said that, the more competition may bring down the price of the VisionDrive ones later down the track.

Can't honestly see the need for them, if I look back on over 50 years of driving probably at least a million k's. In the 5 accidents I have had in that time, video would not have been any help in proving who was at fault, 3 where my own fault, 2 were caused by others one a rear ender and one a T bone. So if these units had been available what use would they have been for my past 50 years of driving. Cheers David
Well over the last 40+ years we didnt have the same amount of road rage & idiot drivers.
I only wish I had it last week when a day dreamer traffic controler turned a stop sight on a line of traffic while he was looking away from the Hwy, I was first in the line & it only gave me a couple of car lenghts to stop, which I was JUSTable to do,
The following car missed us by 100mm, the next 4/5 all made contact. All these drivers veiwed the situation the same way & stated that he was looking the other way & gave no time for vehicles to stop.
He is now under investergation. The camera would have proved his lack of attention & failure to saftley control traffic.

If not then I guess there is no need to have ambulances, govt can save a fortune.

JC, the cars that run up each others bums, would that not be put down to driving too close to the vechicle in front or driving too fast or not paying attention to the traffic conditions???
Not that I am saying the guy/girl with the stop sign was not at fault.

This problem does often happen as you say, But in this case there were no vehicles in front of me, clear vision for200mtrs in which time he had time to display the sighn with adaquate stopping distance therefore none of this would have happened.
At 60kl speed limit to have a stop sighn displayed at a couple of car lengths just created a unavoidable situation. He was sitting on the outside of a concreate bollard, facing 45deg away from traffic, A two way on a cord around his neck that he didnt even pick up to use,his head was hung to his chest to speak into the 2way. Even after the event he didn't even stand up to be more obvious, when it was time for the traffic to go he just turned the sighn when six vehicles were going nowhere, making it even harder for traffic further down the line to be aware of the problem.
In my book he looked to lazey to even scratch him self.

i to have driven 45 yrs of life and have one in each truck and put it in the tug when we go away the amount of near misses i have from other idiots tells me to have them. only on tue night i had a driver decide to turn of after a quick think and no blinker on a 80 zone i had to go out on the grass to miss him the car behind got him.the next one i get will have 2 cameras so i can get the txters on the highway ( i got 1 lady doing 120 coffee in 1 hand diary on the wheel phone and pen in the other and when i put the camera out the window at her she abused me )
i work with cops a fair bit and got told it could get you out of trouble but if your in the wrong it will go the other way to so i try to be a good boy 99% of the time i know were not perfect its the realy silly stuff that causes crashes
check out youtube dash cams theres some funny stuff and then theres some really dangerous things to .
i recon all cars should have one
my cams cost $35 and a 30 gig card was $50 odd but the big card does 19 hrs of recording so i dont have to dfrag them every day i know they re record but they seam to hold recorded stuff better if done like this.
