Hi Folks, me again. Anyone thinking of travelling this road for the next few months especially if you have a large van, take note of our recent trip up there. There are extensive road works on this road which winds its way across the Great Divide. 17klms of the thickest bulldust I have ever encountered, we literally could not see 10 yards when a gravel truck with dog trailer passed us. I should point out that, as an old truckie, I don't scare easily having "been there done that" but there were a couple of times when I thought that we were in deep doo-doo, on one occasion I still have no idea why the side of the van is still in place. Those truck drivers know the road and have to get so many trips in a day to make a quid, but, that road was barely big enough for two vehicles to pass in places. I am grateful for my 50yrs experience with heavy vehicles, I needed all of it that day!
The scenery is marvellous and the freebie camps are great, but I swear that trip took 5 yrs off me!!!!!! If you go up there when the road is made it will be a doddle, they are widening it considerably. Finally, stop at the Anglers Rest freebie and have dinner at the Blue Duck Inn, very nice.

I took that road a few years ago after the bushfires when the log trucks were salvaging the burnt trees and it scared the hell out of me. They had chopped up the road? so bad I was surprised to find my old hiace had not fallen to bits at the end of it. I agree with the camp spots are great and I even managed to bag a couple of trout for dinner. Good news that they are doing good things to the road as I would like to travel it again some time so thanks for the info Magnarc

Hi Phil, you must have missed my replay on the 15 of Nov. I mentioned that the road from Omeo to Talangatta was not recommended for caravans. It is better to go from Omeo to Bright.

Hi Hans, I didn't see your post, but there were no notices to that effect on the road anywhere that I saw, but that would account for the surprised looks on the faces of some of the flagmen when we went past!!!!! Ah well, one more notch in the belt of experience.

Phil, there is a sign in Mitta Mitta " not suitable a for caravans",but that's no good if you come from Omeo.Another good spot to camp is at the Walnuts (toilets,just),and Lightning Creek."good toilets"

We (A Group of 10 GN) did the trip November 2011. The advisery sign says "Not suitable for Caravans". It does not say NO caravans. Trucks of all sizes use it all year round. Listen and use your UHF radio, drive to the conditions and enjoy the trip. Stay at the camping areas along the way, they are very good.
The Omeo Highway supposed to be fully sealed by next year.
