Welcome Kiwi2 - from another Kiwi. I hadnt realised we could free camp in NZ - or maybe it was just that the tourists used to park at the lake in Rotorua and were always being moved on. You will love travelling around this big diverse country and free campers are great people - well - usually more approachable than in the Caravan parks. Have fun and take your time if you can.
Because of the cost of fuel I usually try to only travel a couple of days a week, am going to use CP's less = more free camping. Am almost doing it on a pension

Hi folks can we please get some information regarding traveling on a tight budget (pensions). We are used to freedom camping in NZ and would like to know if it is possible to live without going on Camp Sites eg; paying parks. We will be using a caravan and tow vehicle and mostly want to start off in SA. Any help will be appriciated, many thanks x
Hi kiwi2 - the first thing you should do is get a copy of the Camps Australia Wide book - more fondly known as "the bible" - Issue 6 is the current one, but issue seven is due in mid February - you will save a bucketload of money with this book. Then - read on this site as much as you can - there is a wealth of information on here - read all the sub forums - ask questions - and make sure you keep in touch on the road, with other travellers via the forum - you will enjoy yourselves, I am sure!

There's also wikicamps if you have smart fine or iPad thingy.
I downloaded it for $1.99 & it has a few thousand listings & it's not that old. In my opinion it's not yet a replacement for the camps book but for a couple of $$$$$, it's ok.

Yeoeleven's blog should be quite helpful as well. He posts often in the solos section and has a link to the blog.

can do divine lamb shanks in the thermal cooker - ask Nu one's family - AND Tiramisu
Depending on what area you're in, sometimes there are no free camps, but there are cheap places to stay like reserves.

As of the 1st December apparently there will no longer be free camps in South Australia, we stayed at one in Mannum on the 28th November & the council had already decided to charge $10 per night, just to have a flushing toilet. Be aware that as it is getting close to Xmas it will be hard to find free camp space, we stopped at a couple in Victoria & were advised that there were certain sites that were supposedly per booked. In other words people came to the site set up caravan, tent or even ground sheet to reserve their spot.and they will come back next week & stay there til after new year

Gday...
Another site to add to the resources to help find out where to camp.
Kia Ora Kiwi2, welcome. We are from the Land of the Long White Cloud also. This is a great forum with a wealth of information. We travel on a pension and do quite well. A good budget helps. We don't travel every day, spend a few days in each place if they are good. Sometimes waiting for next pension day before moving on. Enjoy yr travels.
Cheers Val

You couldn't be more wrong. Can you please back up such a presposterous statement with factual proof? In my council there are two that I know of. And that's just one council.

That camp in Mannum has been charging $10 per night for about 6 months now. It used to be $5 but they did up the price. But still, ten bucks for waterfront views is not bad. But yeah it does only have a toilet. I guess if you want to visit Mannum and have a hot shower then you just have to cough some dosh.

As well as the 'bible', Oz Camps is another good one. http://ozcamps.net/

Robyn K, we found the same in SA and Vic very recently. Along the coastline anyway, can't comment inland.
Thanks for the reply we seem to be looking at the same situation. Kids are in South australia and if we want to see them we had better shift.
How long have you been on the road? Val and Rob?
Thanks everyone for the replies we will take on board all the helpful comments
