I would be interested to hear of anyone's recommendations regarding where I might get some insurance for my self built camper trailer. I have tried APIA - will only insure known brands and have tried Shannons - they don't insure caravans, motor homes or trailers. Any suggestions

Hi Tassie
The canopy on the ute pictured in my avatar was insured for $10,000 thru RACV this was seperate to the comprehensive vehicle insurance for the patrol and from memory was around $230 per year you might try your state RAC hope this helps

I built my own camper about 20 years back, did have it insured for a while with NRMA, as that is where all other items are covered.
I had to have it inspected by their assessor & a valuation determined. I done this where I was working at the time as these people were inspecting damaged cars each week.
Depending as to where your rego is, mine was deemed as a folding caravan , this was how it was named on the rego papers, not as a trailer. A legal requirement.

Thanks for the advice people. I will check out the RACT down here in Tassie. I was thinking of joining up with them before I went away so it will be a good opportunity to check that out as well.
Cheers

You could also try CIL or if you are a member of CMCA, Ken Tame & Associates in Melbourne.

Our rig is also homemade and had no problem insuring it with CIL.

Ok, spoke to the very friendly people at the RACT today and they are more than happy to insure my camper trailer for $12000 including the annex and all fixtures for an annual premium of $190.00 As I wont be sleeping in it they will not cover loose contents such as cooking stuff etc but the fridge, stove, water heater, tank and pump are covered.
