We were in Darwin in August Turtle, van parks pretty expensive, we stayed at the KOA park at Malak, expensive, first night $55, two to 6 nights $50 per day, run down, lots of permanants.
Tumbling Waters at Berry Springs a bit south of Darwin was much nicer, $33 per night, nice green setting and good facilities however pretty crowded http://www.tumblingwatersholidaypark.com.au/
For some reason I cant insert a live link, box is greyed out!

We are considering a number of travel options
Starting from the central coast in NSW and heading to Cairns then spending a few weeks making our way across Qld into NT and along the gulf through some of the Nat. Parks to Darwin.

Sounds good. One time I tried to go from Cairns to Darwin, but it was the rainy season and I was advised not to risk it. I'm considering a trip later in the year, but this time will be from Melbourne to Alice and up the centre... Unfortunately I can't give you any info, having not done the trip yey...
