Was thinking about a trip out to Lightning Ridge was told by one information Centre that it was a bit rough, but other people say it's not bad can any one shed some light on the subject, Caravan Parks, Free Camping etc.

Hi Just Roman,
We have been to lightning Ridge twice and have loved it both times. It is so pioneering living for some there that I find so incredible. It is not rough getting into Lightning Ridge - sealed all the way. However, it is quite rough to go to a place called Glengarry - but it is worth every bump just to see the working mines and living quarters out in the field. The "Hilton" out there (which I might add is held together with a coat of paint!) serves the best hamburgers ever. Before leaving, ask for directions as it is extremely outback. We saw several sedans manage the road well. As far as the caravan parks, there is a new one of around 2 years old and extremely good. Called the Opal Caravan Park and not too far out of town. Showers have sliding glass doors and hair dryers near wash basins. Just great. Wonderfully clean. Cost was $27.00 per night for 2 people.

The Ridge is well worth a visit, great place, as chicken said caravan park not far away

There is a free park out on the highway before you turn in to The Ridge. Then there is Lorne Station. If you buy a $10 Ridge Card from the Info Center you get a discount at Lorne Station. Use the card at local shops and receive a discount also. Don't miss going to see The Black Hand sculptures.

I think the rest area at the entrance is also now not an overnighter. Definately go to the Glengarry fields- the pubs are a sight- well, everything is worth the round day trip. We were scratching on the top of a Mulloch heap & I now have a black opal (only tiny) set into a ring. Ring valued at $1,500.

Lightning Ridge great place to visit and stay for a while. Bowls Club has good meals. The self-guiding Car Door Tours are well worth doing. I found the Cactus Garden Nursery fascinating. But before you are tempted to purchase any opal jewellery etc, do your research.

Definitely go, the artesian baths are fantastic at dusk after a day of sight seeing. We had a ball off season, talking to the people in the caravan park who had come back for a few months to do some mining to fund the next trip. The ambience of the place is that if you need to get lost, do it there. Loved it and loved the locals. Didn't find a stone, but saw one before it was cut and after it was cut. The guy was on a local tour, needed a pee and went behind a mullock heap, kicked the stone and said I'll have that. Going back some day!

Fascinating place.In all the years I have been travelling I have never seen a really exceptional caravan park.The opal was magnificent and just down the road from the artesian hot spa
