About 20 years ago, as a solo with a home made campervan (converted Mitsubishi Star Wagon people mover with sliding roof) I had just arrived in Cairns just before dark. I went to a carpark with ocean frontage, I saw another campervan parked there with a female cooking a meal outside on a little hexamine (camping) stove. I parked nearby and decided to have a meal too before working out what to do next, I was in the back when I heard a loud thumping on the side of the van.
I put my head through the roof slider and there was this BIG Maori security guard who told me I could not camp there, when I explained I was just having a meal he said I would still have to move on or he would call the cops. I asked him why the female was not moving on, he said she would be too as soon as she finished cooking her meal (yeh...right).
Not wishing to fall foul of the local law etc, I ended up moving on, found a quiet spot elsewhere to camp overnight and did with no hassles from anyone.

Hello all, was reading Bill12s post about being asked to move on from a c/ park owner.It got me thinking about the time we were sitting in our van having a cuppa in the big rig park accross the road from IGA in Nothampton in WA , when bang bang on the side of van , opened door and the guy from the c/ park was standing there telling us we could not camp there.I told him we were not camped there we were useing the stop for what it is intened for , He was like a wild dog the way he carried on .He went around every rig that was parked there some to use the dump point only,some like us were just taking a break. i must add we had fueled up spent money in IGA and brought a few ..well maybe 6 bottles of wine from the hotel.So buy this c/ park owner being so rude to us all ,we all said we would pass the word around , and in NOMANDS land that kind of talk is not very good advertising, for the town or the c/ park.

I agree his behaviour was unacceptable, and wouldnt stay in the C'P after that experience.... but thats no reason to boycott the whole town. C'park owners start going wild after they see people parked outside their caravan park come in and use their facilities, charge their lap-tops in the shower block while doing so. Theres always 2 sides to every story, he might have finally had enough and you bore the brunt of it, shame he couldnt have been more polite about it.

I have been going to Amity pt for over 40 years, before there was a c/van park, and took offfence at this sheila saying that I couldn,tuse the car park and fish.I might even write to the council and tell them the story, but I don,t think it would do any good.I will just tell everybody. Bill

As this CP owner seems to have been out of order hassling people off site, I would email or write to the Council explaining as above, especially about having done a reasonable spend in the town.
I have never been asked to moved on. A good word for caravan parks, I do not use them often. Used John Oxley at Coonabarabran on my way up as I needed power. $22.00 for the night. Wonderful showers (hot water) and toilets. The whole experience was very comfortable. Not all C/Ps are bad although I would very rarely use them as prefer free camping.

We are currently staying at Pakenham C/P, have been here for 4 weeks,could be here up to 6 months depending on how we handle winter here, have to say a great park and well looked after, managers are very pro active as are the caretakers who takeover when the managers are off, highly recommend it and Pakenham is a very nice place and very central to see lots of places from............loved Phillip Island. Just giving a well deserved YEAH when earned.

This type of behavior is totally unacceptable. CP owners absolutely need to understand that just because you're pulling a rig doesn't mean you're a cheapskate and try to do something wrong. I would of stood my ground if that had happened to me. This is absolutely showing the bad side of caravan park owners. I totally agree that some of them are ridiculous with their demands and thinking just because you're pulling a van you must stop and spend money in their park. This is a very bad experience you have had and don't doubt for a minute it would turn you off from other responsible cp owners.

I was staying at a mates when i got a message on my window from the council saying that there was no camping allowed in the shire. I must move to the caravan park.
I was parked outside his house on a very wide footpath where you could have driven a car past me on the footpath. I had been leaving the next morning and had planned to get supplies and fuel before leaving,but instead bought $15 of fuel and showed the attendant the note and told her the town had just missed out on $200 of sales and that I would help the council by advising their thoughts across the forums which I did.
The town was Crystal Brook in SA.
Normally whilst staying at the mates I usually stopped on the side of the road but as it is a busy corner used by B-doubles I thought it better to go around the corner and sit on the open area designated a foot path but not obstructing anything or one, instead of restricting the movement of the trucks that use that corner as a major bypass. I always parked after the yellow lines but only just and I know that it was safer for all on the footpath area. There is not a lot of room to park elsewhere due to driveways etc.
There was no room for me to park in my mates block so it was there or move on, and I did spend a lot of money there and also helped him with his work for a while.
I was also moved on from a little river beach in QLD. I was there with a local friend fishing for the night with many others. eg cars, utes etc everywhere. In the morning whilst we were still fishing this gestapo RANGER came along and threatened the women folk with fines etc if we wern't out by 10 in the morning and he would not accept that we had been fishing.
We had bought food from the local deli across the road for lunch and tea and was booked in for lunch before we left.
We had to go and cancel our meal booking for 5 and told the owner that we were told we had to leave by 10 so we could not stop for a meal. She was not happy Jan
Cant remember the name of the place but it is in my book somewhere.

I parked one night last year in a beach parking lot at Glenelg, just outside of Adelaide. I was asleep about 8.45pm when there was a loud knock on the door. I decided not to answer, but I looked between the curtains and saw a guy in a Council vehicle. He knocked several times and tried to shine a very bright light into my Motothome. Next time I looked out he was talking on his cellphone. This concerned me because I thought he might be calling the Cops and I'd drunk a bottle of red !!! I decided it would be prudent to open the door. He told me he was from the Council and neighbors across the road had complained about my parking in the parking lot for a long period. I explained that I was very tired and had noticed the safety signs along the highways, if you are tired, stop and rest. We had a long discussion about Councils not providing overnight parking for self contained Motorhomes. Another Council vehicle arrived, obviously his mate that he had just phoned. I asked him what would happen if I refused to move, he said he'd just leave a $200.00 fine on my windscreen. After more talk, he said he was going home now and if I moved on and came back in 15 minutes and parked where I couldn't be seen by the neighbors, I could stay the night. I asked him about his colleague. He said he would talk to him. So I drove off, came back in 15 minutes and slept there for the night. So I guess these Council people are not all *******s, but by being nice to the guy, I was lucky to avoid a fine and stay put for the night. This has been my only experience in 3 years of being told to move on...

Bit rough. If you are refering to the small parking area just near the jetty & in front of a few C/P sites, I have seen fishers parking there every day & most of the night.
We were going to select the campsites that were behind the parking area (best view) but decided not to because of all the fishers parking there.
I have had people IN the Cotton tree CP at Maroochydore very rudely, instructing me not to park in front of their site while I set up my grandchildren for a bit of fishing. The were inside their van when I arrived, so I had not blocked their view. I had a site well back from the water & needed to transport all the gear down & stop there for a bit with the intention of driving back to my site when they were set up. He was so rude & wouldn't listen to my explanation. I took offence & dumped my left over bait under his van when I left. Hope he didn't find it for a couple of days.

Good point thanks Wombat. Will amend. I was told by the person who gave it to me that they had presented it a few times and it seemed to make the people back off - no-one had ever actually signed it.

On the other hand, my neighbor's rellies visited her over Christmas New Year and parked their Nissan 4WD and caravan outside her house for a month with not a peep from anyone. They stayed in the house, not the van, but even so...

Some councils are good and take a liberal view and some are run by little gestapos.
Some councils wont allow you to even keep your own van in the yard if not under cover and out of sight. Same as people with delivery trucks cant park on the side of the road.
You just have to find out the local laws and how they are enforced.
it is like some rest stops they ahve a limit of say 2 days but I have been told by the person collecting the money or acting as the local greeter or ranger that the limit is there so they CAN use it to move on the undesirables. I have been asked at several sites to stay extra if I want.
I was in Rosedal in VIC just before Xmas a few years ago and the greeter came 9as he does every day) and he asked how long I intended to stay and when I told him I would move on the next day as I was looking for somewhere to spend the xmas break to stay off the roads his comment was :whats wrong with staying here it is a nice spot). When I told him that the sign said 48hrs so i would be gone before that he said (OH no that is so I can move the ones on that are causing problems you stay till after the new years).
I did stay and nearly each day he sat down with me and we talked and had a few of my beers (the sneeky bugger).

This is the Australian Road Rule that covers us and parking:
Heavy Vehicle Parking
Under the Australian Road Rules 1999, vehicles over 7.5 metres in length (including a trailer attached) or over 4.5 tonne can only be parked on a road for a maximum of 1 hour.
Apparently it came into effect within all of Australia in 1999. I only discovered this gem a few weeks ago when searching for something else.
From The Adelaide City Council
A long vehicle (including a car with a caravan or trailer attached) that exceeds 7.5 metres in overall length can be parked no longer than one hour, day or night, in unrestricted parking areas unless loading or unloading is taking place. Note: Long vehicles are bound by normal time restrictions in zoned areas.

Whats crazey is if your caravan is say 7m and your car 5m (and your are hitched up) you have only 1 hour. Disconnect them, move the car up a mtr or so (taking up more overall road space) you can stay as long as you like...
makes little sence to me.

Yes this is also the law in I have been told this law is mainly enforced on a complaint being made by someone , This law is for residentially area was put in place to stop truck drivers from parking their trucks outside their residence overnight

I have to agree with you on this law..i believe some of these laws are so out dated , that's why they don't make sence.And i do see a lot of traverlers un hitch in coastal places.leave the van ,and go off sight seeing in the tug knowing the van is safe as so many people around no one would be game to touch the van.They come back from what ever they have done , hitch up and drive off. With a big smile on their face, more or less saying thankx for baby sitting our van for us .Many times i have witnesed this behaviour.

Santa if your were that person who wrote out the infringement notice you would be a legend as the CMCA are waiting for someone to get said notice and be prepared to go to court, and then it would be on.
At the moment it is all bluff and people either move on or just pay the fine.

if you did not want to use that type of form you cloud always say to the osficer, sorry sir, but I am pissed and incapable of driving at the present time, if he/she insist you move on call the police and while they are on their way to you (will take them at least an hour) have a few drinks, when the police get to you make sure you are over the limit.

Yep if you are over the limit and "in control" of a vehicle then you can be pinged.. "in Control" is not just whilst you are driving.. I have a friend whos daughter got done for over 0.5 sitting in the drivers seat of her car listening to the radio in a pub carpark waiting for her mum and dad to collect her and the car as she had drunk too much....
So if you are parked in a non camping area. claiming you are over the limit might just cost you a lot more than a parking fine... be careful

Our laws are so over the top, I think being 'in control' is if you are in the car with the ignitions keys in the ignition, does not have to be turned on, a copper mate of mine told me that a long time ago so what he told me could have changed by now.

Some councils wont allow you to even keep your own van in the yard if not under cover and out of sight. Same as people with delivery trucks cant park on the side of the road.
You just have to find out the local laws and how they are enforced.
it is like some rest stops they ahve a limit of say 2 days but I have been told by the person collecting the money or acting as the local greeter or ranger that the limit is there so they CAN use it to move on the undesirables. I have been asked at several sites to stay extra if I want.
I was in Rosedal in VIC just before Xmas a few years ago and the greeter came 9as he does every day) and he asked how long I intended to stay and when I told him I would move on the next day as I was looking for somewhere to spend the xmas break to stay off the roads his comment was :whats wrong with staying here it is a nice spot). When I told him that the sign said 48hrs so i would be gone before that he said (OH no that is so I can move the ones on that are causing problems you stay till after the new years).
I did stay and nearly each day he sat down with me and we talked and had a few of my beers (the sneeky bugger).

If I were an authorised council officer and someone attempted to pull this on me I would immediately cease all conversation, issue an infringement notice and leave.
This is the Australian Road Rule that covers us and parking:
Heavy Vehicle Parking
Under the Australian Road Rules 1999, vehicles over 7.5 metres in length (including a trailer attached) or over 4.5 tonne can only be parked on a road for a maximum of 1 hour.
Apparently it came into effect within all of Australia in 1999. I only discovered this gem a few weeks ago when searching for something else.
From The Adelaide City Council
A long vehicle (including a car with a caravan or trailer attached) that exceeds 7.5 metres in overall length can be parked no longer than one hour, day or night, in unrestricted parking areas unless loading or unloading is taking place. Note: Long vehicles are bound by normal time restrictions in zoned areas.

Whats crazey is if your caravan is say 7m and your car 5m (and your are hitched up) you have only 1 hour.
Disconnect them, move the car up a mtr or so (taking up more overall road space) you can stay as long as you like...
makes little sence to me.

I have to agree with you on this law..i believe some of these laws are so out dated , that's why they don't make sence.And i do see a lot of traverlers un hitch in coastal places.leave the van ,and go off sight seeing in the tug knowing the van is safe as so many people around no one would be game to touch the van.They come back from what ever they have done , hitch up and drive off. With a big smile on their face, more or less saying thankx for baby sitting our van for us .Many times i have witnesed this behaviour.

who is it that makes these laws, our leaders that's who, and in turn who vote's the leaders in? so who is the silly ones, us or them? they get paid for being silly, that reminds me Dougwe & dazren used to be leaders.
At the moment it is all bluff and people either move on or just pay the fine.

if you did not want to use that type of form you cloud always say to the osficer, sorry sir, but I am pissed and incapable of driving at the present time, if he/she insist you move on call the police and while they are on their way to you (will take them at least an hour) have a few drinks, when the police get to you make sure you are over the limit.
"in Control" is not just whilst you are driving.. I have a friend whos daughter got done for over 0.5 sitting in the drivers seat of her car listening to the radio in a pub carpark waiting for her mum and dad to collect her and the car as she had drunk too much....
So if you are parked in a non camping area. claiming you are over the limit might just cost you a lot more than a parking fine... be careful

Our laws are so over the top, I think being 'in control' is if you are in the car with the ignitions keys in the ignition, does not have to be turned on, a copper mate of mine told me that a long time ago so what he told me could have changed by now.
