That's about 630km I believe ... in 8 hours .... despite rain and roadworks ... that's averaging 78kph ..... if towing a van that's motoring - even without a van that's good average time. Given in an 8 hour journey there would have to be about two hours of stops - morning smoko, lunch, arvo smoko, maybe a refuel - so that makes it say 6 and a half hours driving time - average of 96kph - definitely not with a van I would hope.
I certainly would not whinge about 8 hours for that drive.

Wife's sister and her husband drove from Mission Beach this morning 1/ 3/ 13, It took them 8hrs just to get to Mackay, due to road work's and rain.

I think it wear's the crown of the most dangerous stretch of road in Oz....They need to do more to fix it up than just filling pot holes. As filling pot holes is just a quick fix,the next down pour and we are back to pot holes once again.So it is just a never ending quick fix.but the way this local goverment is operating ..they might decide to sell it like every thing else ...or what,s the hip word at the moment PRIVITISE ..

Two weeks ago we left home (just nth of Bne) for a very quick trip to Townsville (no van) for a funeral. Left early on the Saturday morning, staying overnight at Mackay, arriving Tsv just after lunch on the Sunday. Left again on the Tuesday morning, with a stop over at Bororen (sth of the Gladstone t/o) then on home on the Wednesday. Our tails are finally catching up with us, and this sort of trip I would not recommend to anyone unless it is a necessity (which it was for us).
It really did amaze us, the two weeks before we went, there was no way we would have made it through, even going inland, and of course, yet again, the roads were cut near Gympie this last week. Me thinks we were meant to have been up north in between flood cut roads!
Having said all this, we travelled with a full lolly tub, which came out quite often, and Pete even got to choose his own when we were stopped for roadworks! Works a treat! Pete is a very safe driver and always drives to the prevailing conditions. Even won a DVD on a local ABC radio programme ( think it was around Tiaro) on the way back - yay! Had another lolly to celebrate.

Pejay, gald your trip was uneventful travelling wise (although winnings were good!). We now travel with not just a few lollies but fresh nuts. We find they keep us more alert for longer. Lollies give us a quick pickup but then we feel tired again. Maybe it is the GI factor. Glad you made it between floods.

Last year when we travel the Bruce HWY we enjoyed the stops for the road works , It gave you nice little breaks without looking for rest areas we are never in a hurry
