HUMAX are releasing a Vast decoder (HDR -1003S) sometime in March with many features including a 500GB hard drive for the PVR.Its cost is around the same as the Altech $600.00.One down side is ,that it requires 240 volts to operate.Good to see some new models on the market..Usual disclaimers I don't own Altech or Humax or sell their units,i'm just a consumer ,,..Cheers Peter

The smart card in a VAST system is matched to the receiver when registered and will not work in any other STB.....
PS Humax have a great reputation in the industry.

Hi Salty dog. What are the head aches?,I thought Vast was the answer to everything .Seriously ,are there problems with the Vast system? I'm thinking of buying a vast box shortly,it would be good to know if problems are out there. cheers Peter.
Sorry, i should explain, watching VAST via its priority box is NOT a problem at all.
It works perfect... and there is no reason you should hesitate in getting that system.
The only problem is if you'd like to watch VAST using a third party box, that allowed recording or the tuning in of other channels and providers.
You can buy a CAM that the VAST card slips inside, then that CAM can go in your choice of box... But it still needs a little work.
So its great there is a manufacturer that is willing to construct a box that will handle the strange Iretdo2 variant.

Yes, i read that too. Hopefully it will then prompt some development for other means to watch VAST without all the headaches.

Hi ,I emailed Strong recently, and the comment was there are no plans yet to release a vast decoder in the near future.Altech have just released a 12volt vast decoder which sounds pretty good.As whether you can use the Austar box,you should be able to,but I think they all run on 240 volts.I dont think you can put an Austar card into a strong box.Maybe someone can comment on that.cheers Peter.

The facts are:
to receive VAST free to air transmissions you will need an approved VAST receiver, currently Altech UEC DSD4121.(and variants) It comes with a smart card that can not be used in any other receiver.
If you have an AUSTAR/FOXTEL satellite receiver and you have a valid pay tv subscription you can receive the pay tv transmissions. you can not use the aus/fox card in any other receiver
The older system known as Aurora will be shut down very soon.
hope this helps

Hope to use my old system, ie a Humax for this winter and get Vast next year.
Any idea of the shut down timing?
Thanks

Ahhh - so glad we don't rely on having a TV reception. All seems too complicated for us. Lots of other things to do.

there is an upgrade available for the UEC box that will allow recording to a usb drive
the upgrade includes a software download and a new remote control.
not sure of the cost I think around $90 but please check with satplus or satgear for details

I think you only need one or the other, Vast you can record to a usb stick BUT you can only record the station that is tuned to, so would be ok to record a program while you go down the pub, you will need an extra remote to do the recording.
