Was surprised to see so many R/Vs on the Bruce Highway yesterday 25/ 3/ 13 heading north ,All the free stops where full .Only counted 5 R/Vs heading south.that i saw the whole trip,but c/ vans /motor homes/ 5th Wheelers /Coaches/ ,The price of fuel appears to not have dampend peoples travels from what i abserved .The road works from Glady to Gympie is still in full swing,some of the road works are even geared up to work 24/7 ,Very slow going yesterday due to the heavy traffic and the road works ...put about 3 hrs onto my travel time.

I have noticed more and more RV/caravans on the roads here in rural SA too, all going up north. When we drove into town the other day we watched as 5 caravans went by in a convoy. I have never seen so many, I just hope there are places in the free camp sites when it's our time to go.

I think the free stops ,being so popular is just a reflection of the times we live in and the set ups we have today to be able to use other options ,when C/Parks are charging so much to stay in. I recon also that when these people get to where they are heading they still try to stay away from c/ parks

The annual May to September exodus begins
That is why I stay on backroads, inland, small towns and away from all those who seem to love to crowd into rest areas on the side of the highways and be more cramped than in a van park.
Inland freecamps away from tourist areas are usually much more relaxing and less crowded .... and the locals greet me with friendly faces and are usually not trying to close the camp down.
