While you are in Coober Pedy try to go out and have a look at Crocodile Harry's under ground house, He used to catch Crocodiles up in the N/T ,a real old bushy and has some unreal tales to tell.He built his house him self by hand ,with the help of a pick and shovel.While he was digging out the clay he found enough Opal never to have rely on the pension for his retierment. The Crocodile Dundie movies were inspiered by him ,due to Strop meeting him in N/T while he was catching croc's up there.Well before Steve Erwin was on the scean. Sadly old Harry passed away in 2006 about a month after we met him.But his dug out is still open to the public .
Also worth a look at the golf coarse.....

Did the tour today - really worth it as we were taken right in to the mining areas - but not allowed to put a foot outside the van! Loads of information as well.
Then on to Breakaways - wow!!!! The colours are stunning. Pity we cannot free camp there. Need a permit to go to the area.
On across an extremely dry bare desert area to see the dog fence and back to town for the museum and its underground house and tunnel system, then to the Serbian underground church.
Pity I did not know about the Mail run to Oodnadatta - have to book that trip about 2 months ahead. $195 for a trip of up to 12 hours - and in an airconditioned vehicle. Would have given me a real taste of outback but in relative comfort!
Wow, what an unusual area. Would love to go there sometime. The mailrun would be well worth it. Thanks for the heads up on the 2 month booking Spida. Love the photos.

We did that trip too a few years ago ... Like you we thought that it was fantastic. We missed the Oodnatta mail run too.

That mail run is fantastic, it was so interesting to go to the stations when their mail is delivered, the machinery sheds were absolutely enormous, and most of the homesteads were small and Spartan-looking. We had lunch at the Pink roadhouse @ Oodnadatta, dinner @ William Creek. But it was NOT comfortable, the road was rough, the bus-driver had to stick to a time-table so drove faster than we would have done on the same road. There'd been rain and the desert was green, as it is for you now. Very interesting 14 hour day.

We loved Coober Pedy. Amazing how good the food was to...
Beer Keg Headstone. Take the time to visit the Beer Keg Headstone at the rear of the Stuart Range Caravan Park (the one with the tin camel outside, first one off the highway). You need to drive around to the rear of the caravan park to the cemetery, or I believe some tours may take you there also, but if not do it yourself;
