G'day Wondering if anyone can give is some tips on our next move. We are currently at Eden NSW and are planning our next trip to Charters Towers QLD to meet up with some friends. We are towing a big Van (Geist XCL 660) with a Triton 4x4 petrol motor, and hoping to miss some of those realy nasty roads. Our plan is to travel around 250kl per day so that we can do some sight seeing along the way. We anticipate this taking around 4 weeks and would appreciate any comments on where the best places to stop and stay (not really into free camping as yet).
Cheers Ben & Suz

An alternative from Rocky on the Bruce Hwy is to turn left at Westwood (west of Rocky on the A4 Capricorn Hwy) and go to Emerald then Charters Towers on the A7 (Gregory Development Rd) via Clermont. It's several years since I was on A7 but I recall it was ok. Someone who's travelled it more recently may be able to give you an update.
Charters T is an interesting town and well worth the visit.

Agree with jimricho - the A7 is not bad - we did it last winter - and Charters Towers is a really nice town.
We are in Eden at the moment as well - at the Big4 Gateway - north of town before the golf course - leaving Monday morning I think. Where are you Bensuz29?

I have been up the Newell through Goondiwindi from Canberra also Dubbo, Roma, Emerald. Prefer the Emerald route. Better road and less trucks.
The roads around Emerald are good. Cleremont, Blackwater, Moorambah. Didn,t get to Charters towers, but will this year. Emerald area has interesting places like Sapphire, Ruby vale and Lighting Ridge and Canarvon Gorge on the way.
If you go up the Newell the Pilliga and Goondiwindi areas are good with a side trip to wee waa for the hot springs.

Ben and suz - you are just across the road from us - we are on the highway-opposite Garden of Eden CP - near the entry to the boardwalk. Had lunch at the wharf today - seafood of course - very nice it was too.

This route takes you past the general area of Carnarvon Gorge that you may be interested in if you have a couple of days spare.
If going up the Leichhardt Hwy (A5) I can recommend Possum Park, a caravan park 20kms north of Miles, click on this link...http://www.possumpark.com.au/

We stayed at the Aussie Oasis Caravan Park in Charters Towers over Easter and it was a pleasure to stay there.
Clean amenities, nice shaded site and very helpful owners. We will be back again next year.
Charters towers is a very interesting place to visit also. We always enjoy our stay there.

Went to Eden school in the 60's, then on the school bus to Bega . The Princes Highway was gravel then. Oh memories.

Emerald to Charters is good (did it two weeks ago) but fuel at Belyando Crossing is a shock - $1.84.9 / litre (mid $1.50's either end, lol)
G'day
