We finally got into SA territory today and at the moment we are camped at Salt Creek camp area in the heart of Coorong. Cheryl is in her element with so many birds, etc for her to photograph. If she keeps going at this rate she will need a new camera. Tomorrow we start to move up towards Lake Alexandrina and eventually to Rapid Bay but lots of places to see before that. So much to see. Any thoughts to what should be on our agenda?

In the low season (winter ) if you keep a look out some cheap fares pop up Kana Island. But like all these ferry crossings ,depends if you want to take your who set up or just the vihicle or walkon. It is a nice place to visit in Spring..In the winter would not be a place i would want to be.

Hi Briche, Free camp site at Kingston opposite the jetty on the Western side of town, also a freeby at Langhornes Creek called Frank Potts reserve both have toilets. the Langhornes creek one is in wine terrritory if thats your poison also another great freeby is in the riverland at Barmera right on the edge of Lake Bonney.
Victor Harbour a must, don't know if they still have the horse tram there but that was fun. Also Hindmarsh Island worth a visit for sea birds, causeway goes over now....
We had a free trip on the ferry and nearly had a free cremation on Kangaroo Island due to our tour bus catching fire and the doors jamming, they refunded our tour money including the ferry fare due to our experience.
Missed a bit of the island, but not mutch due to the fire, but some of what the average organised tours see.
Did you have time to get your luggage off? Or was it just yourselves on it? Glad they gave you a refund after that experience.

We grabbed our small backpacks which had our camera's etc in them, but most left theirs and lost them in the fire, the tour company took their details of them and their loss for insurance purposes.
One bloke managed to break a window bit by bit with one of those little hammers and him and his wife got out that way, but got badly cut, everyone suffered smoke inhalation and smoke was billowing up from underneath the floor. Eventually the driver managed to get the door open manually and we all got out that way, none to soon. We all trudged down to a rest stop (where the bus ended up being towed to after it had burnt out) out of the way. A woman started screaming on the bus as she thought we were all going to die, a bit unsettling but luckily we all survived.
Wouldn't like to go through that again. Passengers had alerted the driver earlier about something burning in the rear of the bus, he got out and had a look at the motor and said it was only oil burning off the engine and continued on until a car behind us started tooting and smoke started coming up from under the floor.....

Hmmm. That driver needs to be re-trained I would think.

It was pretty obvious from his attitude and from what I overheard he had no real concern for his passengers and was more interested in covering his backside.
When we got on the ferry to go back to the mainland, he and a couple of others from the office handed us all a souvenir mug and pen, no doubt instructed to do so.

Sorry we hi-jacked your post Brian. Regardless of DDuh's experience, Kangaroo Island is worth seeing but as another poster said, winter may be too cold.

Hi Gordon,
It is only a 24 hour stop with toilets a short walk. Grassed area right opposite the fish shop on the foreshore beside the jetty. Very pleasant spot and is only a short walk to a local pub and the main street. Definately will stay again. (re Kingston freeby)
