G'day, Yesterday I removed the starter motor from my '06 Ford Territory - it's the same starter as most Falcons made in the last 20 years. The plan was to replace the brushes simply as preventative maintenance. Removal took some time, plus skin and blood, however the worst was when I found brushes are just not available. Local autoelecs spent hours trying to find the parts. I rang the manufacturer Robert Bosch (Aust) who gave me the part number and said none were in stock anywhere in Australia , none were on order plus they would not be ordering any because no one repairs starters anymore. Amazing!
The web found me an answer - a place in Melbourne carries these brushes and for $28 delivered to my door I can have my starter good as new. The alternative is $280 from new starter from Ford or $100 for a Chinese copy.
We've lost our way, haven't we.

Yes we sure have lost the value of repairing any thing any more, We live in a disposible enviro for sure. And the do gooders go on about reusing/ recycling.Makes one wonder what they are on about. Just try getting the trusty old toaster or iron fixed . Nill impossible.

i totally agree with you on that score,i do my own maintenence as well,iff i cant get a part more often than not i make it out of a different model or make.Today i had to modify a brand new clutch fan to suit because my 1981 toyota is too old to make spare parts for, i too think the world is going down hill. Yup, a couple of years ago my wifes Hyundai Accent (not all that old) had a crunchy third gear. As a retired mechanic I thought that it would just be a simple matter of a new synchro ring, gasket set and Bob's your uncle.
Sorry, either secondhand gearbox, or new.
We don't repair gearboxes or diffs.
Throw away cars.

its like my lawn mower a mate built for me yonks ago , I wanted to see what it would cost to fix but they said if its not a fully imported unit they dont want to know about it.. struth..
My 1994 Ford Courier needed a new heater fan for rego. They installed a used one without my asking. Fine with me. Ford Taree is pretty good like that. I also bought my own helper springs on eBay and they installed those for me as well.
Oh... and a used bull bar.

Howdy One & All,
I had the same feeling about no parts available for my 98 Ford Futura a short while ago.
I went to the local Ford dealership chasing a couple of front seat-belt replacement Buckles,
The Guy behind the counter just laughed at me, saying.... "Nup" we don't carry any parts for anything over 10 years old.
Luckly for me I was able to find the Buckles at a Wrecking yard, $ 20.00 ea

Hi Hako, one would hope the brushes come as an assembly like in the last 2 pictures, as the brush leads are spot welded. (this is a Ford startermotor). I get them for free from the scrap yard & pulthem apart & check the brushes & couple of drops of oil on the bronze bushes then re assemble as spares, as i use 2 Ford vehicles.

Partners daughter has a Ford Escape 08.04 so not too old.
Needed new water pump and gasket.
From Ford $649 plus fitting time of four hours. $1200 ........................................ Without new thermostat at $142
Aftermarket pump $149 fitted myself in two hours. Dismantling and reassembly. Taking off the battery and tray and undoing all nearby hoses to make job easier. Plus $49 for thermostat.
Ford told me there was only one pump for the vehicle from 2003. Wouldn't fit Turned out it was a 2001 type and was not fitted to the 04 model Yeah!!!!!!
Ford wanted three days to get one from Brisbane stores but none in stock, would have to come from Melbourne and wanted extra for freight!!!!!!!!!
This was Ford in Darra one of the biggest Ford agents in metro Brisbane.
At those prices I reckon it would cost hundreds of thousands to build the car from spare parts even if you could get the parts.
The pump I got was an aftermarket version from the same company that make the Ford part.
Throw away or rip off that's the way of the car world these days.
Yup - my thread as well. Most of the blokes on the Ford Territory Forum are under 50, so whilst they'd love to do their own repairs most of them either do not have the time.
My kids are the same - double incomes, big mortgage and working overtime when they can get it so they never get any spare time....and the stuff they throw away!

Repiring starters went out years ago. When i worked for a Ford dealer we used to keep exchange starters, untill the price was to close to new. Repco quite often have Ford starters for $150, so why would you bother. The main problem is the high labour charges & cheep products. I frequent a local scrap yard & salvage parts for free. See lots of quite good cars just crushed because it will cost too mutch to fix the engine. One notable one was a Hyudai that the keys were lost & the quote for keys & programing about $1000. Customer just walked away & it was crushed.

G'Day DeBe, They're very similar except the brush holder is slightly different though I have no doubt they would fit. The starter is made in Brasilia (Brazil) although the armature at the pinion end is stamped made in Germany. Our dump is controlled and you are watched from the time you arrive to the time you leave, and wreckers want $50 for ordinary Falcon starters. Apparently the Territory/BF Falcon starters are different for some strange reason, so I figure $28 delivered brand new is OK, but if I could scavenge I would as I love dumps. Back when I was a kid, I'd ride my bike to Tempe Tip in Sydney with a haversack, pliers, screwdriver and magnet and scavenge all the non-ferrous metal that I could find. Still remember the prices - 1/9 a lb for copper...1/3 brass and 10d for lead. Used to buy a small pack of Greys fags with the coin!
Pics attached are self explanatory except last one where I had to tie the brushes back with cotton to reinstall them after I found I couldn't buy new ones. Good Luck.
