I have what I call egg cartons on my bed at home and in the Avan. I just love them. It might take a couple of nights to get used to them but well worth it in the end.
Edit......I have tried a couple over the years but found the yellow one from Clark Rubber to be the best, a little dearer but better.

The egg crate tops are great. So much so that when we book a cruise we stipulate that we want the egg crate tops on our beds in the cabin. Some beds on the ships are a bit on the hard side (especially in the cheap cabins which is all I can afford)

Ok, what is the consensus on egg shell mattresses?....Good, bad, indifferent? Or what about those memory foam thingies. We were using an instant bed with a blow up mattress in the tent, but now with the van we need input before we part with more hard-earned. Any advice is welcome. Cheers Jim.

memory foam beats the egg top hands down - a good quality cotton mattress protector solves the 'hot' issue. Can be purchased to size from foam specialists - cheaper than dept stores

not sure what type of van you have but what ever you get make sure you are comfortable on it
also if you need a square if it is against a wall or rounded edge mattress if your bed is in the middle as it gives you more room to move

And I'm afraid we would also be dissenters in the camp jimanjen. We have found them to be comfortable but too hot. OK in a clod climate so depends where you are heading. Maybe you could put it under a thick mattress protector?
PS I did wonder what this was all about when I first saw the heading for the thread!!

Hi Jim we have a double bed in our van and found it very uncomfortable after sleeping in a queen size bed for years. We bought a foam egg type overlays fromk target which has made the bed more comfortable. The prices for these overlays differ somewhat from bedding stores but the price from Target is well worth the price.

We have a pillow top memory foam mattress and we hate it. It's too hot, and we have a thick mattress protector on ours and it makes no difference to it. I'd never get another one. In the past I had a memory foam pillow and that did the same thing, plus it caused pressure pain on my ears...hated it.
I might get one of these egg carton\shell overlays for our caravan mattress. Thank you everyone.

I used to use a memory foam pillow but found that I got hot.
I have been told that some (Lots) find that the memory foam mattresses do the same thing ie. make you hot and sweaty. Very expensive too compared to a good quality mattress by a major manufacturer.
With the eggshell ones the latex version is supposed to give the best support.

We got the egg shell overlay to use on the airbeds as the vinyl was hot and sweaty. Worked a treat, and was so comfortable- but storage was a problem, so we threw them onto the beds in the van just for easy storage really- great move!
Got ours from Clark Rubber.

This was our experience also.
We found that the van's innerspring was too hard so we got one of the 'egg shell' overlays from Clark Rubber. Have used it with a mattress protector for the last 14 years. Might be time for a replacement.
Put one on our home guest bed because of the hard mattress. Always get good feedback about it from visitors.

I had the eggs with a mattress protector over the top, was getting up to 40 when we were at Echuca this year, no problems..........

So that might be the solution. Make sure you have something over the top of it. We changed our foam mattresses for innersprings because they used to get hot.

I have just got rid of my cheap egg carton topper pad - bed seriously hot!!!! After talking to several 'experts' in Darwin I was advised to get a very high density foam pad. Low density pads retain the heat, and the egg carton ones also do as the heat gets trapped in the hollows. I am sleeping much cooler now, although the high density is certainly firmer. My new topper pad is about 2" thick and has no cover at this stage other than the mattress protector.

I was talking to a mattress bloke, he reckons that egg crate foam is old technology and has been replaced by foam overlays with holes in them right through the overlay (bit like the holes on those outside rubber link mats you join up). Apparently the holes allow the heat to escape and give ventilation. Not sure where you get them from though.

Hi Vic, my son uses those rubber click together rubber mats under his swag ,and recons they work great to keep the moisture from creeping up onto his swag canvas. Wonder if they would work on top of a mattress ?
