Could anyone advise if Ulan road is suitable towing a large van from Mudgee to Merriwa or should I use highway 84 which adds around 30 min to the travel.
Cheers

Can't help with that info Ben but I find 30 mins is nothing when in the playground. If in doubt use 84.

Hi Ben We travelled the Ulan Rd a few years back and its condition was reasonable then but rough in some places, don't know what it is like now, but 84 the Golden Highway was beautiful drive taking us right down to the New England Highway it had only just been completely sealed and the country you travel through is magnificent. G`day Ben If the road you are talking about runs through Wollar there is a large section of dirt which has quite a lot of corrugations in various spots. One concern was a creek crossing that is quite steep , very rough & slippery as you come out the western side. Depending on rainfall in the area might make this crossing quite hard. Hope this helps

Ian I think you have the Wollar rd and the Ulan rd mixed up.
The Ulan rd goes from Mudgee and joins the Golden Hwy at Turill near the forest.
The Ulan rd is sealed all the way to the Golden Hwy. It is a bit narrow in places and the edges are a bit rough in places but once you get to the mine the road improves dramatically all the way to the golden hwy intersection.
We towed our 22' caravan over that section in October last year and had no problems at all.

No problems with the Ulan Rd bensuz29. We used to travel it all the time. There could be a bit of wear and tear if extra traffic from the mines has caused it but the only thing we'd say is watch out for wombats. That stretch always had a lot of dead ones. (Sorry Wombat!)

No problems with Ulan to Merriwa at all. I've often travelled that way from both Gulgong (lived there until recently) and Mudgee. Anyone that complains about it has absolutely no concept of country roads & should stick to the metropolitan freeways.

Absolutely agree oldboar. Just the wombats.

Yep, lots of wombats in that area. Not really a drama though if you avoid driving around dawn, dusk or at night.

Don't try and avoid the wombats as you could do more damage to the tug than if you reduced their numbers.

The road through Wollar is a good one to do for the scenery - minus the caravan Bud. It's very pretty.

Neil & Ruth you are right there is a lot to look at with plenty of places to stop & take it all in. Cheers Ian
