The Warrego Hwy is a well travelled route for me, with lots of rellies in the west, but I've never been to Taroom, so it'll be nice to see some new country.

I'm heading off tomorrow to Taroom. My route will be the Warrego Hwy to Miles, then north on the Leichhardt Hwy to Taroom.
I'll have a stopover tomorrow night at either Bowenville or Chinchilla Weir, then 2 nights in the Taroom CP.
So if anyone's in those areas, look our for Lucy, Lulu and me.

I just had a look on the caravan park web site at Taroom,do not know if this will help you with your stay there ,,it reads Special offer...stay 3 nights get 4 th free, but some times this is just a marketing ploy as they factor in that 4th night into the other 3 nights you pay for, But thought i would let you know of this offer.

The offer is genuine. Lot of history there, Leichardt crossed the Dawson at Taroom.

Make sure not to miss the display at the info centre. In the lawn at the front is a good example of what a semi load of ammonium nitrate will do when it goes off.

Re: the CP, I rang them a couple of days ago and was told about the special. Otherwise it's $15 powered, or $10 unpowered. I don't think I'll stay more than two nights. Really only there for the funeral, so I'll have a look around and go on somewhere else. Haven't decided where to yet.
I have to be home by the 28th, so not a lot of time.

If you can spare the time it's worth visiting the church on top of the hill in town as there's a huge amount of country visible from that point and for some reason it's very relaxing just sitting there looking at the scenery. Take some binoculars.

May I suggest that you make sure that you make a visit to Possum Park.
Possum Park is about 20 klm's north of Miles on the Wandoan Road.
It is a sort of resort and the owners have developed from old army storage hill side bunkers into a sort of motel style living accommodation. Make sure you visit the community hall and take a look at the Darcy Doyles fabulous paintings.
This site is part of the Brisbane Line, that I think General Macarthur ( I shall return) during world war 2 was prepared to allow the Japs to invade and hold. He would defend Australia south of the line.
Now this may not be 100% correct, but the owners will detail the history to you.
You will not be disappointed.

Well, after a few holdups, I finally got away at 1.45! I know, not ideal, but I knew I wouldn't be going far today. (182kms)
I'm at the Bowenville rest stop, between Oakey and Chinchilla. Bit too close to the highway, probably be noisy tonight, but I was too tired to go any further.
Oh and get this! Lucy & Lulu took on the Toowoomba Range for the first time! I've avoided it while towing the van in the past, but I really just wanted to shortest route. I was down to 2nd gear, but Lucy certainly didn't struggle. Most of it is down to one lane with lots of roadworks. My son had warned me of all the roadworks I'd strike.

Maybe not relevant this time, but as a regular at Possum Park (click on underlined link) I can endorse Jay and Dee's recommendation. The sites are drive-thrus and the rates very reasonable. In the "Grey Nomad" tourist season they have a friendly happy hour around the campfire.
(disclosure: my only connection with Possum Park is being a satisfied customer)

Re: the CP in Taroom, yes it's good park. Cheap at $15 p/n, and the showers are hot and clean, if a little old and tired looking.
Now FYI...this is another CP in the Surat Basin which is bringing in cabins for the workers. They say there will still be room down on the lower level, but it can flood down there, I'm told. The caretaker here is pushing for the showgrounds to be made available. After all, they do display the 'RV friendly' sign.
I arrived to find my sis & bil already here, plus other rellies. So there were 12 of us for dinner at the local pub tonight. It was good fun, but I was so tired I thought I'd fall asleep at the table. I was in bed by 9pm, and now I'm fully awake again. Grrr!
Funeral tomorrow.

No I don't Jules. I just figured, as a letter hadn't come by Friday, that the op wouldn't be this week, so I could have this few days away. Fingers crossed. I could always phone my landlord to see if there a PA letter come.

I decided to stay another night as I was so very relaxed and enjoying the peace.
Also so I could drive around a bit today, before heading off tomorrow. So I went out to have a look at Chain Lagoons CAW 6 #585. There's only a couple of picnic tables there, but it looks like it'd be a nice quiet place to bush camp. I hear there's fish in the Lagoon too. I also stopped to take some photos further along the road, and surprised a family of pigs in this dry bed.
