What a pity Bob has been tossed aside for the sake of this so called cost saving strategy from the Geraldton city council,we have stopped there on many occasions ,and have been surprised in the hard work Bob put into keeping the area in a clean tidy condition for the travelling public to stop over for a night or two.I am wondering if the council will send workers out every day ,as you could always rely on Bob everyday. Some of the work he took on went beyond his $50 pay packet. Some of the mess that was left behind on one of our stops from not caravaners ,but a group of Nissan 4x4 clubs heading north, They left more mess than all the back packers staying there put together.Cannot understand any savings regarding this ,sending two men all the way out from Gero and back again for the sake of $50.Next it will a payer use stop like a lot of others going from free to payer use, I am not against payer use ,but then unless there is a caretaker on site , only the honst one's will be doing the right thing in this regard.

Just makes me so bloody mad,,over $50 PLEASE.....if I was living back over that way I would damn pay old Bob out my own pocket the miserable $50.He just loved that job mixing with every one, once we were stopped there and this bloke had problems with his bus ,so Bob drove him all the way into Gero for the part and back out again...We called in a lot there due to the fact we were based further up north,so every 6/8 weeks we would head down to the big smoke for some R&R.

Old Bob the caretaker has been given his marching orders from the Murchison rest area WA ,he was paid a measly $50 a week to clean the toilets and collect the garbage, now the council have decided to sent a truck and two drivers to do the same job from Geraldon ,how can you justify that cost saving.
We have just left there and there was no rubbish anywhere whats the betting that will change.

I hate this kinda of....backward progress. Is there anywhere we as a group could write to the appropriate council and complain that not having this great guy Bob to take care of this place will mean it will go down hill?
I have never been to this stop over, but I know some of these locals put their heart and souls into making places like this enjoyable for the next person to visit.

Hi Grams , you must have read my mind, over the same issue, I have just sent a email off the Geraldton city council ( GREATER ) expressing my disgust in such a money pinching approach to saving $50 when in reality it is going to cost them $ $$$ in the long term.

I have just sent off my email too. I hope the council are so inundated with emails about this that they hire Bob back with a rise in pay....I always try to be optimistic....

Obviously it wasn't just a job for Bob but a way of life, and something to occupy his time. Sounds like a good bloke and a bit of a character to me... with probably more brains than all the local councilors put together.

Reckon you will find it is something to do with OH &S - probably - can't have an employee earning below minimum wage, got to have workcover on him, superannuation etc - and bullxxxxxxx goes on!!! Probably his $50 came out of petty cash anyway!!!!!!!!

I received this tonight....
The Shire of Greater Geraldton has sent us an email that you wrote regarding the caretaker at Murchison Rest Area. I think they should of forwarded it on to Northampton Shire as Im pretty sure the rest area is in their Shire. Hope this helps you out.
Kind regards

Common sense no longer seems to have a place in this world. It was situations like this and people like B ob who made this country the great place it was and in most part still is. Silly silly council.

Is this the rest area out on the highway from Kalbarri? In 2006 when I was travelling that way there was a real charachter looking after the new loo's and campsite, helping people back their vans in and so on and always ready for a yarn too, nice bloke....if it is the same chap then I really feel for him.
Wouldn't be a better set up to have a lot of 'old Bob's' looking out for rest areas everywhere.....there are lot's of travellers who like to stay put for an extended period and would welcome that sort of a set up and it would help keep the rest areas / camp sites cleaner, safer and feel good!

The truck and two drivers were probably doing nothing all week. Still, I wonder how much it would cost in fuel each day.
