This has probably been asked before...but....what is the general consensus of all you diesel heads on the best quality diesel available in Australia?...I wanna give our old engine every chance to perform at her best, and need input and thoughts on what you have all experienced. Toyota 2.8 mechanical injection if that matters. Also, what engine oil is considered the best? Its no good reading the manufacturers blurbs, because they feed you whatever bull the advertising gurus tell them to. Any thoughts would be really appreciated....or a link to a past thread would be good if already covered in here. Cheers Jim.

i always use castrol rx super in my patrol 4.2 turbo never burns a drop between services i service every 5000.kms (my choice) but there are a lot of very good oils out there and no doubt you will get a few different opinions but never buy cheap oil you get what you pay for as with anything i also add wynns engine oil additive

In the Kimberleys in the heat and dust my boss used what Neil [ must be a great bloke as my name is Neil as well ] said, Castrol RX Super. We used that in our breakdown trucks and all diesel engines that we serviced including stationary diesels in generators, air compressors waterpumps etc. Last place I worked the boss used Delo 400 in everything which included a lot of tractors and agricultural equipment. Never heard of either of these products causing problems. That's not to say that every other oil is not equally as good. With diesels I am a bit more fussy about filters than with petrol engines.

Les worked for Mobil Oil for 30 years, I remember him telling me that most oils come from Mobil but are branded with other brand names. I can't ask him as he has just gone to bed as he's on days this week. I'm not sure which he prefers, but I think most of the better known brands are all the same, in that they are as good as each other. Just don't opt for the cheaper ones.

I use mainly use Castrol premium diesel as it has 2% bio diesel which is said to provide some lubrication for the high pressure fuel pump. In the Astra it seems to run much better, but in the pajero there is no detectable difference.
Lubricating oils are always full synthetic which is now the recommendation for most modern diesels that are coming on the market and I only change the oil every 12 months or 15000k.

Hi Jim. I drive an RV based on a MAN truck/bus chassis.4.6 intercooled turbo. My last service they advised me to change to a Castrol full synthetic which was more expensive $90 instead of $40 for the oil but it has extended the service period from twelve months to eighteen or ten thousand to twenty thousand K's.
I have done some eight thousand K's so far and have not had to top up any oil at all. Appears to run well and I cannot fault it. Worth the extra in my view.

me too for all of the above - mechanic once told me to always use the same oil - don't swap brands - even when I pay to have the Navara serviced I supply the oil.

As far as good diesel, I now try and use BP wherever possible. I have a 200 series and a number of issues seem to be related to Caltex but I would only guess that the issue revolves around individual servos and poor delivery tanker cleaning. CRD motors are much more susceptible to poor diesel quality. As for oils, any good quality oil in the viscosity range required by your manual would be fine. I, like others, change oil and filter every 5,000 but if using synthetic then I would extend it to 10,000, probably.

DOH!! I just remembered.....I have a nephew who is a diesel mechanic..I shall ask him as well. We have a BP in our town, so I suppose that is my best starting point. Thanks for the advice all. Any further thoughts are still more than welcome.

Hi all,we have a Ssangyong Rexton that we tow our 1977 WA made Modern high roof 20 foot van,around 2.5 ton,i have always used valvoline super diesel and never had any problems,a few years ago not saying how many but i raced sedans in speedway and ran valvoline in all my engines and never blew one so i will stick with it,cheers.
