A question from Trish & Dave newbies - for the long term travellers

I have put my notice in at work - yahoo - 23 August is my last day. My partner has just got to do his. We hope to be leaving on 30 August and will make our way to Birdsville for the races which are on 6 and 7 September. Then after there we hope to have some work lined up and will head to there. We are planning on being away on a working holiday for a minimum of 1 year. We are renting our townhouse out etc etc all those great things - organising storage etc.
My question - which might be a little silly - what do the long term travellers do in relation to mail. We will still have have mail coming so I want to know do you organise a PO Box before you go and have someone from "home" collect mail or how do you do it.
We just bought a camper trailer and that will be our "home away from home". I am very excited - so over "working for the man" (pardon the corny pun) but we really are. I just think that the next three months will drag. Anyway any tips etc would be appreciated.

Welcome to you both, we are doing the same thing and have been for over a year now, re mail we have a po box and a friend forwards on our mail, though there is very little as we pay almost everything over the net and really only have to worry about rego and that sort of stuff, anyway hope you have a great time and 3 months will go before you know it.
Cheers

I have y mail sent to one of my daughter's addresses. When I know where I'm going to be I tell her where to send it. I've found that getting her to send it c/- a post office is more reliable than getting it sent to say a caravan park address.

Thanks Pauline - I'm thinking we'll go down that track - a PO Box - just on a personal note - I looked at your profile - your birth date is 1900! You're really doing well he he - can I ask how old you are and do you and your other half get a lot of work?

Look fantastic for my age also...............I am late fifties, hubby is early sixties, he id a truck driver and always seems to be able to get work, we did 6 months at Mackay for the cane season and have been here in Pakenham since January, will be moving on to Echuca July/August and may settle in there till he can get his pension...............then let the fun begin though we have really seen a lot of places we never would have had we not done this.

We are doing the same thing soon. We are having most of our mail, electronically done, eg Centrelink you can get your letters etc done this way, as well as Telstra bills! the only mail we will be getting is insurance and registration, those are going to my daughters PO box, and she can scan them and email them to us. Then we can pay them. Though the Rego of vehicles will soon be done as a monthly direct debit, so that would be great.

There are services which will give you an address, and forward your mail. Can't remember names offhand, just Google 'mail forwarding services Australia'.
Be warned though, they can get exxy.

We're away 5 months this trip. We have a PO box at home and to get our mail on the road we:
Purchase prepaid bags from PO and when we want our mail we ring the PO and they put all our mail into a prepaid and send to us C/- the PO we nominate.
Guess which PO staff will get a Chrissy present.

My mailing address is one of my daughters. I phone her about once a week (free hour on my Telstra mobile) & check what has arrived. I tell her what is junk & to throw away & what I will need & when we decide on now is the time to send it she puts it in an express bag & sends it to the nearest PO. This has worked for us for nearly 20 years. PS I give her some money every now & then to pay for the postage.

Hi Trish and Dave,
We have our mail re directed to our son, he then scans any bills and emails them to us then I pay them online. It works great for us. Enjoy your travels, life is for living not living to work, your plans sound excellent, enjoy yourselves in this wonderful country.
